The Martin hate on here is silly.
Yep. Other than Letang, Martin is our only D who's capable of playing 24+ minutes a night, and can play a shutdown roll.

Despres, Dumoulin and Harrington are not there yet. Morrow, Pouliot and Maatta are not really the shutdown type.

Something I still firmly believe is that the Pens need a big bodied D who can play that shutdown role. And could live without them being big bodied if they excelled at the shutdown role.

I have many times... and I agree. BUT, with a new arena coming (at some point we all know a new one will be built), and with the young team they have there, I'd easily overlook the city. And lets be honest... it's not 'that' bad.

When your wife doesn't actually move to Edmonton (from what I remember reading, she stayed in St Louis the entire time), there's bound to be rumors there. Whether or not it actually happened...

Dave Molinari ‏@MolinariPG
Brooks Orpik, discussing Paul Martin's 2011-12 performance: "I think he was just as disappointed as anybody else last year in how he played"

Dave Molinari ‏@MolinariPG
Bylsma, on Paul Martin's value: “Paul is a good hockey player. You just ask around the league. You just ask the players he plays against."

now i'm waiting to hear Martin comment on Orpik's subpar play and Disco's lack of adjustments.

Bylsma says Paul Martin will remain in a top-4 role and, in tomorrow's P-G, identifies a surprising candidate to be his new defense partner.

https://twitter.com/MolinariPG/statu...01834276110336

Wonder who it is?

FYI, there are four options with Martin (after this season):

1. Keep him
2. Trade him
3. Buyout
4. Trade him in a deal where you increase the return in exchange for eating some of the cap/payroll hit (this is a new CBA clause).

IMO, they keep him this year. No matter what, I don't expect a buyout.

We became a better team last year when he got hurt and we split his minutes between Niskanen and a bunch of rookies. Playing a lot of minutes is one thing - playing well with a lot of minutes is something else entirely.

Martin may bounce back and return to form - and I'll root for that as long as he's here. But there's no denying he sucked last season, and he deserves all the criticism he gets for it.

I'm thinking DB will give Strait or Bortuzzo some love and say one of them is a candidate to be Martin's partner. Whether it happens or not is a lot more iffy imo but he said surprising and Niskanen, Engelland etc. aren't surprising candidates imo and I recall him saying Despres could be a good partner for Letang one day.

I just don't think it's going top be all that suprising. I think it could go like

Bylsma: "He really stepped it up last year in the playoffs, even when the team was down his play was solid. We'd like to see Matt take a bigger role with this team, and we expect he can do that".

Maybe lovejoy? Obviously not my first choice but I looked at all the responses to his tweets, and Molinari said the correct answer was only said once. Lovejoy was the only answer I saw once.

I certainly won't be surprised if you're right. Niskanen really is the obvious heir apparent on D to Michalek's spot though. I love Engo but he's a 5 or 6 while Niskanen is probably expected to take that next step this year. I expect Bylsma to list Niskanen as a candidate but I also expect him to throw a not so obvious name out there as a candidate too. I do believe Niskanen will start out in the top 4 though and probably with Martin.

Lovejoy/Martin being the surprise pairing is scary... Makes me hope they will be paired together on waivers instead.

Oh god please no. We have a good 4 to 5 defensemen outisde our top 4 (58, 44, 7, 2) that are better than Lovejoy.

Good to see Bylsma saw what the rest of us did. Where'd you find that quote?
