when you look at the amount of salary mcphee is committed to for 13-14 compared to say the flyers, the caps have a lot of flexibility there.

Some talk on Business board that this could be up to 15% of total cap hit per team.

Saw this over there as well via TSN:

Salary Retention in Trades:
- Teams permitted to retain up to $5M in a trade
- Max retention of $3M for a single player

So no long-term retention ala Jagr.

And according to nhl.com Caps were even on ES.
To add to that Hamrlik's 4 playoff points were at ES leading the d-men. Green contributed when he was somewhat "allowed". LOL

Definitely a requirement for this CBA. Cap space is an asset that should be traded... just like air quality credits for manufacturers.

Yearly rates or total salary?

You think that there has to be a max amount you can retain. Cant have a 10M roster with a 40M cap hit. I saw the 15%... seems a little low.

@capgeek: Teams can retain salary/cap hit for up to three SPCs [at a time], to a maximum aggregate cap hit of 15 per cent of upper limit. #NHL

@capgeek: Up to 50% of SPC can be retained in trade. An SPC can be traded twice with salary/cap hit retained. #NHL

The designated minimum salary cap of $64.3M leaves a minimum of $9.645M available for such transactions so hard to figure teams coming close to that in light of the other restrictions.

re-entry waivers are gone in the new CBA.

Ska* and no unless the new CBA is ratified, the players are still locked out, the coaches can't be on the ice with them, which is why training camps haven't started.

So as long as no new CBA, no violation, just stupidity. I had thought he was a sure shot for Captain of the Devils, but now its in doubt.

as for rebuilding. the caps could fire mcphee and then the new gm could fire sale off all those aging out vets in the caps core lineup. ovechkin, backstrom, johansson, laich, alzner, carlson, green, orlov, holtby and neuvirth. they could bring is some high round picks to add to prospects like forsberg and grubauer and wilson. it might be fun.
Firesale now?

Hard to include OV in that group, wouldn't you agree? Makes too much, and is pretty one-dimensional.... IMO.

Backstrom, he's someone who'd make GM's drool. Holtby too... but some of the glitter is off of him after these last couple o' month's play.

Carlson/Green/Alzner have value. But not as much as they once did.

The others you cite, have their equals on every team in the league.

The glow is off the Caps... has been for a while.

Oh... been enjoying reading your ideas, and exchanging. If the mods want to end this thread, I'll chime in on other threads. Good posts by many here lately.

Brooks is usually an idiot, but sometimes, he can surprise the reader, and is simply ignorant.

Whatcha ma who?
Holtby has been solid in the AHL, and has the 2nd highest save pct. while facing the 2nd most shots.
Alzner and Carlson have less value than they once did?

Too late for firesale. Should have done last deadline (Semin, Wideman, Hamrlik, Vokoun) and before the draft (Laich, Neuvirth, Green). Getting a ton of players in the 12 and 13 drafts with the shortened season would have been a lot more effective. Then sign Getzlaf, Perry, Zajac, Smid this summer. Would be back and ready to go next season. This year's cup is tainted anyway.

Oh yeah and another thing regarding Ovechkin is that he flew out on January 7th, which is Christmas in Russia.

Strange thing for a guy who wants to stay.

To be honest, Christmas isn't nearly as big in Russia as it is in the NA or Europe.
