If Luongo is the real reason here, then I want them to now make the trade and have it blow up hard in their faces.
Agreed.
I don't like using this guy as a source, but most media guys are not taking about why. They keep saying something "fishy" is going on or more will come out later.

Brian Burke kept trying to change the Roberto Luongo deal wonder if the new GM will move a little quicker. Canucks want 3 elements.
I actually feel kind of bad for Brian Burke. It sounds like he was taking a reasonable stand on the issue (why get gouged to pick up that horrible contract?) and the Leafs should actually be expected to be a decent playoff team this time around. Looks like he's on his way out just as things were looking up for Toronto.
Per McKenzie ... Nonis officially replaces Burkie for a 2nd time.

Not liking deal, Burke would not come close to matching Canucks requirements to move Luongo. Canucks adamant: They're not giving goalie away
You got have respect for the guy. He would have been a hypocrite to trade for that contract. His crusading is a huge reason those contracts were stopped in the new CBA.

Makes you glad we have management that have their heads on straight.
What a crazy reason to fire someone. Toronto is truly a rudderless franchise.
I don't have any sympathy for Brian Burke though. All those resources behind him and he misses the playoffs 5 years in a row in a league defined by parity? How many GMs could survive that?
The chances of Luongo imploding in Toronto are also... shall we say, elevated.
Wouldn't mind having him in the organization at all.
Brian Burke??
Burke is not someone you just add to your organization and he sits quietly in meetings and gives input. Burke is going to run the show wherever he is. Having Joe's mentor looking over his shoulder and breathing down his neck would be a recipe for disaster. And Gainey is already here in that role.
