I really hope Foster is heading to Philly and not Ottawa. I don't want Foster on the team. Hes brutal.

There was a reason the Devils shipped Foster out in the Zidlicky trade so shortly after acquiring him last year from the Ducks. He's simply barely NHL-caliber now. Still a decent PP specialist and has a nice shot but he's a defensive liability. Can't even say he was ever even a PP QB and he certainly isn't one now.

Which Flyer defensemen are not expected to be ready other than Pronger? I recall hearing something about Grossmann but is he still injured? The fact the Flyers got Gervais in the summer baffled me; signing Foster now leaves me even more confused. They'd better be letting Gustafsson or Bourdon play, even Manning, before Foster. Flyers fans thought Kubina was bad. Foster and Kubina play a similar game but Foster's worse at this point. I mean, I guess he'll bring a little offense from the blue line and will make their PP better but the Flyers will be in big trouble if they give him any significant ES minutes.

Gustafsson has a deeply bruised, though not broken, foot and Bourdon is out with his 97th concussion. Meszaros is just now being cleared to practice after his torn Achilles last offseason. Lilja is also recovering from offseason surgery still, though he should be more ready.

Timmonen - Schenn
Coburn - Grossmann
Meszaros/Gervais/Foster/Lilja in some combination on the 3rd pairing till Gus is ready in a few weeks and we see what kind of minutes Meszaros can log with his current conditioning.

Totally forgot about the Meszaros and Lilja injuries. Didn't hear about the Gustafsson or Bourdon ones. Still, I'd give Manning some games. I'm also trying to decide who I think is better at this point, Gervais or Foster, and can't make up my mind because they're both equally mediocre.

Want to know how much I missed the NHL? I just spent the last hour or so updating the first post with UFA destinations and looking up to see what the unsigned UFAs are doing (I'll hopefully finish that sometime tomorrow and put it up here)!

I mean, I just spent 5 minutes trying to figure out if Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll is still playing or not?! (FTR, yes he is, he appears to be playing hockey for a Canadian University).

Manning has struggled big time with the Phantoms this season so far. I'd call up Syvret or Lauridson over him depending on the role to fill in.

The word(s) on some remaining UFAs

ROLSTON, BRIAN: Per Will DePaoli, TIOPS: "Agent Steve Bartlett taking calls on veteran F Brian Rolston but says it will have to be right situation for Rolston to play this season."

TURCO, MARTY: Per his own twitter account is working with a flexibility coach in Dallas

KOSTOPOULOS, TOM: Is rumored Vancouver talked to his agent last summer, scuttlebutt has them interested in bringing him to camp.

LEBLOND, PIERRE-LUC: Is still training and hoping to play per his own Twitter account

LALONDE-MCNICOLL, CEDRIC: Appears to be playing university hockey per his own twitter account

MORRISON, BRENDAN: Per Calgary Sun: Was a member of player's negotiating committee, is entertaining whether or not he'll play: "Do I feel I can play? Yes, I do. Am I absolutely dying to play? No, but I would like to play if it's the right situation and I'm a good fit."

BOYCE, DARRYL: Played for Hamilton of AHL, but was released from contract. Nothing further

DVORAK, RADEK: Has been working out with Florida Panthers players

STURM, MARCO: Per Panthers writer Harvey Fialkov: "Don't be stunned if Panthers re-sign Marco Sturm and at least 2 invitees make team. Santorelli could be in trouble." Meanwhile, George Richards who also covers Panthers says Sturm says he has interest from a few teams but Florida is not one of them.)

MITERA, MARK: Had a try-out with St. John's of the AHL but was released.

GRAHAME, JOHN: Listed as Sioux City of the USHL's goalie coach (where he coached before coming out of retirement to dress for the Isles down the stretch), so it's likely he has retired again.

PANDOLFO, JAY: Skating with Boston Bruins players this week.

LANGKOW, DAYMOND: Was rumored in early January to be retiring but I see no confirmation anywhere.

SAUER, KURT: Hasn't played since in years due to a concussion.

JOHNSON, BRENT: Has been skating and practicing with the Pittsburgh Penguins players.

MOORE, DOMINIC: Took time off to be with his ailing wife who, unfortunately, recently passed away.

VANDERMEER, JIM: There were rumors that Vancouver was looking to invite him to camp, but today Comcast reports that San Jose has been in touch with him, as well.

WHITE, COLIN: Some speculation that Ottawa might be interested in him.

WINCHESTER, BRAD: Attended a skating camp with a handful of NHL players in early January.

ARNOTT, JASON: Is skating with Dallas Stars players, including wearing a Dallas jersey, leading to speculation he will be invited to camp or signed soon, though Dallas beat writer Mike Heika does not believe the Stars have any interest in signing him. His agent stated that while Vancouver was interested in him last summer, his sense is their interest has "Waned".

CHEECHOO, JONATHAN: Some guy claims he will sign with an NHL team after the lock-out, but mostly no talk about him.

HUSKINS, KENT: Was practicing with Anaheim players last week, per Eric Stephens.

KNUBLE, MIKE: Has been skating with Grand Rapids, per Stephen Wyno: his status is "up in the air"

JONES, RANDY: Skated during lock-out with St. John's AHL players

Interesting about Turco. What does that mean though?

For now he is, but he's left the option of returning to the NHL on the table.

Could be that he's just keeping in shape, but it seems more like he's keeping in game-shape, hoping to catch on with a team that suffers a goaltending injury, like Boston last year. Personally, I think if Toronto doesn't acquire Luongo, they'd be better off bringing in Turco to back up and mentor Reimer than bringing up Scrivens.

Lots of he said/she said out there today on UFA destinations.

Tom Gulitti
Quote:
Sykora will get an NHL contract somewhere. No tryout. In addition to Devils, Washington (Adam Oates connection) among teams interested.
Followed shortly by Katie Carrera
Quote:
FWIW, from BoG mtg RT @Ledger_NJDevils: Capitals haven't contacted UFA Petr Sykora and GM George McPhee says that is not in his plans.
I think until the UFA market opens (Likely Saturday or Sunday), we'll be getting a lot of these "So-and-so interested in so-and-so" followed swiftly by "so-and-so says no interest/discussions". On one hand, lots of times it's just beat writers speculating, and other times it's because no GM wants to incur wrath of NHL and make it look like they're doing business when they're forbidden to do so, though I expect there is a ton of "informal" chatting going on with agents right now.

Hecht apparently re-signed with Buffalo, one-year deal.

Brian Rolston and Andrew Brunette have not officially retired, but both are leaning that way

Rolston
Quote:
[on retirement]"it's more than likely. I've had a great career. You play for 17 years, I'm very content. At the same time you have that feeling like, 'Am I really done?' You've been doing it so long, you feel like you have to go back and do something. But I'm happy if this is the end of my career. I've faced the reality of that."
Brunette
Quote:
"I'm not going to be someone who hangs around waiting for an injury. I don't know how many teams are looking for a 39 1/2-year-old guy who can't skate. I don't know how much interest there is. But if there was some, it would be interesting. If there's not, I'm OK with that."

I really liked Foster before his horrific femur break. The wild were so classy to sign him to a one year deal so he could rehab and whatnot with their doctors bc they were going to sign him anyway. That said, his game isn't the same. He has a nice shot on the PP but you'd like more defensively. Dunno how much that has to so with the injury or what, just my opinion.

Also, glass man Radek Martinek is on LI skating with the isles. One of those "if he could stay healthy" guys. Very solid defense
