Horcoff is practically the perfect fit in Buffalo.
But, I don't think Leopold is enough to get him unless the Oilers are really that desperate to shed his salary. And frankly, it's not the salary that's an issue, it's the cap hit.

Wonder how off in value Leopold for Belanger is?
Salary and cap are taken together, there's no seperating one from the other with this clause, I believe.
I think a Belanger for Leopold swap is a fairly reasonable suggestion. I would argue though that perhaps Buffalo doesn't want another small/average sized center (although he has old man strength so it's not like he gets pushed around). Edmonton though could still use Belanger in the very least for the defensive game he brought. I'm fairly sceptical that VandeVelde could provide the type of quality in minutes that Belanger could (maybe Betts could?). At the end of the day i do it just because i think Leopold is probably the superior player at this point.
The ability to keep Peckham or Teubert out of the NHL if somebody gets hurt.
Peckham really isn't the problem IMO, he's a young dman and he can fill a role. I still think he has an upside much greater than he gets credit for. He plays heavy PK minutes and is a legitimate policeman in that he can play and fight while bringing a physical game. He may never be Wille Mitchell but i don't think Matt Greene like ability is unattainable (that guy just won a cup as a legitimate player). We traded/gave up on Greene too early, almost Smid, lets not do the same with Peckham.

This. Two years ago, Oil fans were in love with Peckham. He had a setback last season after injuries, but lets not write him off yet.
yeah I am game for Horcoff of Belanger. Horcoff fits Lindy Ruff's system and adds veteran leadership for Buffalo's younger forwards. I would prefer to trade Belanger believe it or not.
Both have contracts expiring after this season so if they don't work out, both teams can walk away.
Buyouts. Teams can make terrible long-term decisions because "**** it, 50 game season, we gotta do things now" and just walk away anyway if they don't work out, so long as they have the money and/or market size.
Leopold is not the right defenseman for Edmonton. The Oilers need a gritty shut down guy.
The Oilers aren't in a postion to be picky. They need a warm body on the blueline that can give them some quality minutes. Leopold fits that bill.
I'd rather see them give up Jones then Horcoff or Belanger. The Oilers aren't great at center, and those are their only two-way guys. They don't have anyone to backfill the 4th line at center either.
They are stacked at wing, and can afford to part with Jones.
I'd take Horcoff, but I'd want no more than $3.5m of his salary, and I'm not sure Edmonton would want $2m of dead money on its books for the next three seasons.

I like Jones, and there's little doubt that Buffalo could use his jam and competitiveness in the bottom-6. But I peg Leopold's value to be around what Oduya got at last year's trade deadline: a 2nd and a 3rd. (Say nothing for the fact that Leo is considerably better than Oduya.) Do I think Jones could bring back that haul at the deadline? Probably not. So I'd probably just rather hold on to Leopold until prices soar at the deadline, especially if there are as few sellers as last year, and I imagine there will be given the condensed season. It's not that I hate the offer, I just want to maximize Leopold's value.

That's just it, you an never have too many dmen. The Oilers need NHLers back there and if the new cap can help them find a deal on a useful piece then they ought to pull the trigger.
