How dumb would that be if signings and trades can't start until the PA ratifies the CBA? They aren't ratifying the deal until the day before training camp. From my favorite team's perspective, how is that enough time to get Jamie Benn's contract signed, and get him in the city of Dallas for camp?
If the PA needs several more days than the NHL to vote, so be it, but you'd think they'd be OK with allowing the NHL to get the ball rolling a bit sooner.

Im more then positive that the league has given owners permission to start talking with the RFA's agents. Just a matter of approving the deal and getting the paper work signed as soon as its done.

I agree, I heard an interview with PK Subban where he says that they know they are on the same page, so obviously there has been some communication between players agents and the teams.
For some reason i highly doubt the Luongo deal is done to Toronto. Im the biggest skeptic of this trade. If Luongo retires at 40 the leafs will have an additional 2m on the cap for 3 years. This (IMO) would drive Burke nuts. I don't feel that Vancouver needs to make this deal right now. Why not wait until the end of the season? With Kesler down, wouldn't a fantastic goalie tandem help the team more then Bozak? Also there is always the trade deadline. No need to rush this thing, unless of course Toronto is by some miracle giving up a kings ransom.
He can be bought out with one of the 2 amnestys that the leafs have (buyout = no cap hit, just paying). So not exactly true.
Teams will be allowed up to two buyouts over the next two summers -- 2013 and 2014 -- either one in each summer or two in one summer and none in the other. The new detail here that I found interesting is that any player bought out under these circumstances CANNOT be re-acquired by that same team during the upcoming season, not by waivers, not by trade and not by free-agent signing.
Obvious reason here: The league doesn’t want teams to cheat the system and get a player back under a cheaper salary (since the buyout doesn’t count against the salary cap).
Luongo is a good goalie, but garddang that contract is loooooong. Acquiring Lou pretty much means goodbye Reimer. Burke would totally be giving up on the kid. BB would be wiser to acquire a vet on a short term deal. Let Reimer observe.
FWIW Matt Frattin was a healthy scratch last night for the Marlies
fishy but on the same note alot of teams are pulling guys they see as NHL roster players.
Bozak , Frattin, Reimer. Franson are likely names we are going to hear, it is a good start. Not sure if the Nucks need Reimer in the deal but they do likely need a backup G from somewhere
Those buyouts are only good for the summer of 2013 and 2014. You can't keep that option indefinitely.

Why not? I would say a season and a half is enough of a tryout to know what you have with Luongo. If he is awful, why would they want his 5.3 million dollar cap hit going forward? If Luongo isn't performing like a number one goaltender in Toronto, this would be a huge disadvantage to the Leafs cap wise (trading for or signing expensive star players).
Sure it's a lot of money, but if any team can afford to do this it would be the Leafs.

Not at all. Unless you've got a surefire future star, like Schneider, you take the current star every single time.
Leafs fans should be very excited about getting Luongo no matter what the price. IMO.

Luongo has been one of the best number ones in the league for a decade, he wouldn't suddenly suck regularly.

I don't believe that at all.
He's had Tuckers $1M for 4 straight years.... now he added Armstrongs $1M for the next two.
He effectively has a $2M cap hit for bought outs players RIGHT NOW.... I don't think in 7 years it will matter much considering the cap at that time will likely be $80-90M.
It's a risk. Just like any trade or signing. Chances are that he would do fine in Toronto, but at least they would have the option to get out of the cap hit if things go downhill.
Isnt that what every good manager does tho? sets what he feels are rules to making a successful team. He probably feels that its not worth giving up the pick, and he stands as good of a chance of getting the player in FA as opposed to just before.
He may go "The club wont trade for veteran players" or "The club will not trade draft picks unless receiving a higher pick in return."
Both of those are rules.
If you dont agree with the way he is managing, feel free to criticise. But dont knock the process.
I know there both examples. But, he has traded for veteran players and he has traded draft picks without recieving a higher a pick in return.
It's not worth it to give up a 7th round pick for Vokoun at 2m per over 2 years? But, it is to go after Luongo for multiple top assets and a contract of 5.3m per over 10 years? A 7th round pick has basically no value and the contracts aren't comparable. If Burke didn't want Vokoun for 2 years, why would he want Luongo for 10?
Burke had to of known that Vokoun was getting dealt either way. You don't think Washington would have made this known to Toronto, trying to get a better deal? I guess he could of took the chance that the team he was getting traded to wouldn't sign him. But, for a 7th round pick why take that risk?
