... Why the **** would the Panthers be bringing in Luongo when they already have Markstrom in their system long term?

Probably because Luongo is an Olympic gold medalist.

You just can't get any better than that.

Probably because Markstrom isn't as good as advertised.

Out of nowhere, Leafs fire Brian Burke.

I'm not sure I understand this one too well.

Why fire your GM just before the start of training camp in a lockout-shortened season?

My guess given the timing is that Burke and the management had a major disagreement on something. Can't see another reason for the timing of it.

But what disagreement would result in a prompt firing such as this?

Speculation, go!

Main board is saying Luongo.

Though if that is in any way, shape or form true, then I cannot see Luongo agreeing to go to Toronto. Already half of the fans and a portion of the media would hate him.

Maybe Burkie didn't think Supreme Overlord Morgan Rielly was immediately worth a roster spot.

EDIT: Okay, I haven't looked at the main board thread yet. I probably won't right away, because I'm going to let it simmer down a bit due to the sheer mayhem that's likely to ensue. Besides, speculation is more fun.

Yeah, it's gotta be Luongo. Kind of disappointed because I wanted the trade to happen...

On a completely unrelated note, since my username is still PublicEnemy for another month or so...what should I make my new avatar to keep to the original theme of the name (**** you, Tim Peel)?

Any good suggestions?

Who knows what the disagreement (which was just what I was speculation on anyhow) is. Maybe MSLE is inserting itself into things that are Burke's area or responsibility and Burke doesn't like that. Maybe it's related to Luongo or some other type of trade. Maybe it's a disagreement on win now vs. trying to build longer term.

Will be interesting to hear though

Another possibility is that several teams where expressing interest in Dave Nonis (Director of Hockey Operations who does all the "details" of trades and such). Nonis said he wanted to be GM somewhere, and MLSE gave him the opportunity.

The way the Main Board is talking, it sounds like Nonis is the brains of the operation, so if he is the one in charge, I guess the two 1sts for Kessel Leafs are still alive and well.

Maybe Babchuk traded himself to the Leafs, but Burke didn't agree to the trade, so the Leafs fired him so as to not upset the Hockey God Anton.

Wait, did I have that backwards? Reading the TML board, they seem to imply the organization wants Luongo, and Burke doesn't. I just assumed it was Burke's idea, but I guess not. Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks

The timing would make sense, because now Vancouver can absorb some of the cap hit and salary cost.

MLCE wants Luongo, and Burke keeps blocking them by citing the horrible contract that Luongo carries with them. The new CBA alleviates that (to an extent), and Burke still blocks the deal (who wants a goalie that is signed until 42?!?!). MLSE says fine, if you won't do it, we'll bring in someone who will.

Good god. The TML Burke thread has more people viewing it than the main lockout thread had most of the time.

It's all speculation, but there's a school of thought that Burke has consistently been against these long term, cap circumvention contracts. So while he might like Luongo, the contract was a sticking point and the Leafs fans felt he wouldn't offer that much for Luongo because of that.

I'll be surprised if that's all there is to this firing though. Has to be more than that..doesn't there?

Alright, that makes sense. Can't fault either side. Burke staying firm in what he believes, and the organization citing why it makes more sense to trade for him now. Thanks.

Another thing to consider: Burke's punishment stipulation was included in the new CBA, where teams are "punished" on the amount of Cap savings that frontloaded contracts save them at the time the player retires.
