Burke apprently fired as Toronto GM per Bobby Mac on Twitter.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently fired Brian Burke as general manager. Working on official confirmations.

Surprising...

Given the very strange timing, my first instinct is that the higher-ups want Luongo and Burke doesn't. Or that whatever direction his "goalie search" is headed in is not the right one.

Very weird.

I dunno, but the team is in much better shape than it was when he picked it up. Am I wrong here? Im pretty sure they are a playoff team this season.

Though first couple of years but indeed he has made solid moves, the Phaneuf trade, the Beauchemin to Anaheim that got Lupul and Gardiner + the JVR move this summer

His UFA signing were not very good especially Komisarek

I don't understand. What are they basing this on? If its failure to compete then why now?

"Much" better? They've actually performed worse under him than they ever did under JFJ/Fletcher. You can argue that the future looks brighter, but that's what they've said about the Leafs for a decade now. Until the results are there, it doesn't mean much.

I also agree with Hoto and think it's because of the Luongo fiasco

Would have been tough not to be a better team after 4+ years on the job when:

He could spend to the cap every year.

Had carte blanche to completely blow the roster up (which he pretty much did).

Had a fanbase willing to tank for a few years, yet he decided to make the Kessel trade, which put them in-between rebuilding and trying to win.

I have to think this is Luongo related too.

I can't understand the timing of this decision. After the off-season, before one season game is played,, If it's because Burke and the upper management doesn't agree on Luongo it would be hilarious. I don't think Luongo is the answer for this franchise. I think they were on the good path for a playoff spot in the near future but giving up a lot of assets for a goalie pretty much kicked out of Vancouver would be a step back IMO. It's just speculation but there has to be a big disagreement.

Hearing that makes sense because of their record while he's been there, and yet equally makes no sense because of the timing of it.

Damn I liked having Burke in Toronto, I knew they would never improve under his tenure.

I'd imagine since he has a pulse, he's interested. Just about every higher-up not currently holding a GM position (and maybe some that are) will be gunning for that spot.

Because he cannot get him? I'm not well informed on this Luongo Case. Did he proposed a trade? Is he against that trade?

But it's another day in Toronto. Fans are gonna scream on their board. IMO, Burke was doing a good job and getting Luongo is not a good idea for TO. We'll see.

I haven't heard any rumors either but it just seems like with the fit being so obvious (Vancouver practically pushing Luongo out the door and the Leafs in desperate need of a competent #1 with unlimited spending money) that the only reason it wouldn't be done by now is that Burke doesn't want to do the deal.

Perhaps its the case but what message does that send to the goalies they currently have? "We don't trust these goalies enough to have you fired". Ouch.
