Agreed. Isn't he pretty much the face of the franchise in WPG? Or does Big Buff crowd him out of the picture?

Wasn't sure where to mention this but whatever...

1987 Canada Cup - ESPN Classic is replaying all of Canada's games from the tournament, with the three-game final between Canada and the Soviet Union on TSN.

IMO the '87 Canada Cup final was the greatest hockey ever played...

That's some of my all time favorite hockey to watch that 87 Canada Cup.

You know what pisses me off... The assertion Ovechkin is a bad captain, in comparison to Landeskog.

Ovechkin has carried this team every year, always scoring the most in the regular season and playoffs. What more can he do?

I believe that Landeskog has been praised for his all-around game; that he's dependable in all three zones.

Ovechkin has had six more years than Landeskog to develop that all-around game in the NHL . . . and yet Hunter had to bench Ovechkin during large parts of the playoffs last season because Ovechkin couldn't even be trusted on the ice when the team needed to protect a lead.

What kind of "leader" refuses to make improvements to his game that the Caps have been trying to get him to make ever since his rookie year? Hanlon even benched Ovechkin late in his rookie year for not being defensively responsible. Obviously, that benching had no effect at all, since Ovechkin last season remained just as undependable.

And where has Ovechkin "carried" his team to, since he can't score enough to get them out of the second round? Oh, and you'll say that it's the fault of his teammates . . .? I don't think Ovechkin has "carried" Caps anywhere. He has failed right along with them. I have higher expectations for a captain than just scoring a few goals.

Losing in the 2nd round is a hell of a lot better than missing the playoffs. Steve Yzerman is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in NHL history. He didn't win a Cup until his 14th season in the league, and only got past the second round once in his first eleven seasons. Ray Bourque never won a Cup while wearing the "C" for Boston.

Ovechkin got benched because of a Wideman **** up and Holtby with his 4 foot wide five hole.

What Ovechkin is supposed to do when Semin is no help on the PP? Backstrom?

He still out scores everyone on the team while taking the the full brunt of the blame.

When it comes time for a lockout, I bet Landeskog ends up the in the CHL making no attempts to lead his team through a lockout by suggesting they all join the same European team.

Ovechkin carried this team through 07/08 to get the ****ing A! Where as Landeskog carried the Avalanche to getting the Capitals Forsberg. Thanks kid!

Now? Weird timing. Should have used the lockout as a chance to perform a search.

Nonis will probably take over. It's been noted that his first big move as Vancouver GM was picking up Luongo from FLA.

@odognine2: Do your tie up kids. It may cost you one day. #leafs

Maybe they did and are firing now so any player moves can be made by a new leader.

What's the take on Burke here? He's sucked with TO but was good in Van and Ana. Would anyone here want him for the Caps?

If you're gonna do it, why not do it after last season? The timing is ridiculous.

If Nonis were next in line it feels like Dreger would have broken the news, but who knows.

Not a fan. He makes poor decisions based his own ethical views (as far as I can tell; things like NTCs, self imposed trade blackout dates, etc) that leave his team at a disadvantage. They're not that serious and I do applaud him for having principles, but he uses them to draw so much attention to himself that I find it maddening.

Also, much of his success in ANA was inheriting strong assets from Murray, IINM. I feel like he's been too slow to adapt to the nuNHL and don't know if I'd trust him.

Balzy taking Ryan over JJ... all Burke there.

Crazy they dumped him now. I wonder if there was some major discontent on how to move forward from this CBA.
