Just confirmed by McKenzie on TSN... The timing is shocking but i assume that the new ownership didn't want to deal with Burke and the way he operate.

I don't get it. Why not do it last summer? What could have possibly happened between September 15th and now? I guess discussions were had behind closed doors that ownership didn't like.

So bizarre - new ownership has been in place for months, nothing has been happening in the league operations wise, then 3 days before camp they fire him, on a team that has a huge number of holes to fill? Sounds like Leafville.

I thought they'd give him another year or two, honestly.

But then again, when you're finishing near the bottom of the conference for years, what's there to wait for?

There must be something not yet told, the timing just seems so odd.

Exactly, in the time he was in Toronto the Leafs got worse, then returned back to where they were before he got there. And they lost out on some really good players in the draft.

Biggest problem for Burke: He came in with HUGE expectations and make promises on how the Leafs would rely on toughness and truculence to win but didn't deliver the goods. The Kessel trade didn't help either since Burke, at that point, decided to take the short road instead of the longer one which would have been the best option for Toronto.

i wonder if this firing is over roberto louongo? my read is that burke wouldnt deal with vancouver because of his 'ego' history with the team... ownership probably gave him an ultimatum to make the deal since everyone and their cow can see that its the right move to make...

personally i think burke is a pretty darn good gm. vancouver and anaheim werent overnight success but he created/developed the foundation of pretty good teams there. i like the bones hes laid down in toronto too.

and i love his media relations

heres hoping he finds a high profile spot to land

Hopefully it's so he can take over as commissioner... No way it was over the Kessel deal because he won that deal for the past three years , although we will win it for the next 15.

Maybe he wanted Luongo, they said no, and said **** you and they said see ya later?

Wow, that is a shocker.

I wonder if attempting to trade for Luongo played a factor. Maybe they just couldn't stomach another 'pin the franchise on this blockbuster' move from Burke.

I know. I can already see people making jokes about how he should go work for Boston, since he's been working for them all along...

I hope he gets hired somewhere else so Chia could tank another team.
