Luongo's situation has to be the cause of this. Either the higher ups wanted RL and Burke didn't or vice versa. We'll see who the replacement is.
McGuire as replacement?
I actually think that's probably the reason. He probably didn't want to deviate from what he perceived as value and disposable. MLSE probably wanted Luongo so badly but Burke couldn't trade pieces he felt would hurt the team more than Luongo helps.

No I think it was the other way around. Trading for Luongo is a Burke type move. A move that would help the team today but hinder them far down the road when he is gone. He probably pushed hard to acquire him but the higher ups wanted no part of him especially with the new rules.
Imagine if they were stuck wit Luongo under the new rules now.
Oh well they still have my cousin James to rely on.
Burke fired. Knew it was going to happen eventually since incompetents never last long in high profile roles like that, but didn't think it would happen before the CBA agreement was even offically signed.
Will actually be interesting to hear the post-mortem on this one.

Timing of Burke dismissal very odd. He and all brass were at Marlies game last night in Hamilton. Truth will surface. Something fishy.

guessing he got fired because he wanted Luongo too bad or wasnt persuing Luongo hard enough.
Burke has always been a guy that falls in love with his below average goalies. I'm guessing the Canucks were asking a lot for Luongo and Burke wasn't willing to give it up because he had faith in Reimer.

This is my worry. Now that Burke is out of the picture, MLSE might put a guy in there willing to part with Reilly, Gardiner, or their 1st this year in a package for Luongo. Which would suck for the Oilers.
Our management never told us this would be a short process. Burke told Leafs fans that they were just going to "retool". It's been a disaster.
That's fair enough, I can't imagine how much it would suck to be a Leafs fan for the last while. It's like being Oilers fans but without the draft and with higher expectations.
