The key problem here is putting any stock on a rumour reported by the Toronto Sun about the Montreal Canadiens.

I think Doughty's contract was ridiculous to begin with. Doughty got that deal after having 2 down years...there was no Cup run by that point. So as much as people laugh...Doughty didn't deserve that deal when he got it.

With that being said he's not worth 7m a year.

I find it highly unlikely his agent would be asking for 7 million knowing that Doughty leads in every comparable. Doughty has a cup, and was a Norris finalist. That would basically end any conversation of getting the same money, at least for right now.

They probably reported it because Subban is from Toronto (Well, Rexdale) and goes back there in the summer.

Doughty signed that before the Cup and was coming off a down year.

This. I feel PK will get Tavares money with maybe a year shorter term.

Nope. I'll try to find a source, but there were reports that money wasn't the isssue, but more the term. Bergevin wants 2 years. Subban wants 6+ years.

Because Kane us locked up long term on a solid contract while PK Sub ban is still unsigned. The fact that he's unsigned lowers his value substantially.

Not really since he's restricted, that like being locked up for the remainder of the restriction which is what, another 4 years.

I doubt the habs are offering anything close to 5 million/year.

If they were Subban would be signed.

I'm guessing he wants 5/ year while habs are offering 3.5-4.

They'll agree on 4-5 years, from the looks of it.

Sounds like the Habs want him to still be a RFA when this contract is up and Subban wants to be an UFA when this contract is up. It makes little sense to go 5 years, might as well go the max.

well that is true, but the Norris consideration is by far the biggest thing he has done in his career to get him that contract, and short of winning the Norris there's nothing he can do to raise his value.

Is it after 4 yrs or 5 yrs that he becomes a UFA? IIRC, Carlson's (and probably Fowler's too) deal ends right when he turns UFA.

Norris nomination? Doughty was always a top player...A down year did raise people's doubt. Heck I still doubt if he is ever going to be close to his Norris nomination but his play in the playoffs proved he can step up and deliver despite having a bad season.

Subban isn't worth Doughty money, yet. I have a hard time believing that PK Subban is more important to the Habs than Carey Price..

He is a RFA. If there is any legitimacy to this. PK? Hope those commercials pay well.

There was that time he was phenomenal in the worlds greatest best on best tournament. That had to have some bearing.

True, he didn't and Subban doesn't deserve it either...

Probably around 5.0 to 5.5M on a 5-6 year deal should do it for PK...
