As you tought, he is the new GM per Bobby Mac but maybe by interim.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Dave Nonis is the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unclear whether that is interim or unconditional appointment.

Interesting fact is that it is Nonis who brought Luongo to Vancouver the year after Burke was fired if I remember correctly. You see a pattern here!

Or the players try even harder to prove to management that firing Burke was a mistake since it seems he was well liked by his players.

Pretty much the guy who helped a divisional rival become better for the foreseeable future & immediately win the cup.

So Burke #2 takes over the Leafs...good to see things won't change over there.

I really think this came down to the Luongo deal. Either Burke wanted him and owners did or vice versa. That's the only way this firing makes sense.

Pretty sure he didn't want him. He hates those ''wonky'' long-term deals and was big on Reimer.

Nonis being announced as GM probably means Luongo is coming. Which could be an epic disaster for Toronto in 2-3 years.

He may be a disaster, but I really don't want to have him in our division.

Well he seems to treat a hockey team strictly as a business, and treats players like assets instead of people, that's the general consensus anyway. Whether that's good or bad depends on your opinion.

LOL, this is exactly like the Gainey to Gauthier switch. Burke stays on as senior adviser. There'll probably be not much change, similar to when Gauthier came in.

LOL I remember the love and the hyped expectation people on this very Habs board had with Burke. "Oh he won the Cup" as if that was almost a guarantee of success. Down goes the popular belief that people who had won will keep on winning and that they are automatically the best solution and people who've never won will keep on losing and cannot be the solution. "But he has never won anything..."

RIP Entertaining GM Interviews. At least Gauthier was ironically funny.

It's not just about winning, he has made a lot of solid moves throughout his career. He even made some good moves with the Leafs.

Burke is a quality GM and is good for hockey IMO. A guy like Gauthier is a loser.

I think the biggest worry when you fire a GM is potentially downgrading, I don't think the Leafs fans have to worry too much about Nonis, like we did with Gauthier.

No doubt, but what I mean is there'll be no huge change in philosophy. I think they'll still try to make playoffs instead of tanking.

So where does Burke end up?

Does he have the patience to build a team from nothing like Columbus, or does he join a team that's been underachieving and needs that final push? Thanks to the lockout I forget which situation every team and their GM status is in.
