But there was a story behind the request by the new player: In the hours after his brother Timmy died after a bicycle accident short of his eighth birthday, Matt Gilroy vowed to wear Timmy’s No. 97 for the rest of his life.

I hope Stepan has been taking skating lessons. He still skates like he had a colonoscopy the night before ALL the time.

Kreider did not put the numbers in the AHL. McDonagh was OK in the AHL when he spent 3-4 months there in 10-11. McDonagh was terrific as soon as he joined the Rangers. He played better in the NHL than AHL.

Stepan's not really that slow of a skater, he just doesn't have a very quick first step, etc. Him being aggressive and staying engaged game in and game out is probably far more important than his skating at this point

I don't see Torts loading up that first line like that. He will want teams to defend at least two potent lines. Also, I think Hagelin is better suited for Boyle's wing than kreider for various reasons. I think we'll see

61-19-24
20-21-10
62-22-14
17-halp-45

If no Hrivik, Miller, or anyone else unexpected makes the team and we don't sign any tryouts or UFAs these are the lines I see being used most often, even if Torts juggles them a lot.

I'm sure somehow word gets from Torts to the players on what pairings he would like to see and drills he would like players to do.

Don't freak, but according to jersey color, here are your #NYR lines: 61-19-10; 24-21-62; 20-22-14; 17-45. Again, no Halpern or Haley

What's it matter to him, he can't even watch them to evaluate it.

I am sure he would like to see some players playing together to start to gain some chemistry.....

I'm sure he would be upset if Nash was playing with Rupp and Asham.

How often have the lines we started the season with lasted more than a month? Remember how set he was on Dubi-AA-Cally and Avery-Stepan-Fedotenko? Then after a stretch of 6 bad games "They're stale. Change em up."

Would think that people would learn to not really pay any attention to Torts' lines. Regardless of what they are in game 1, he's going to mix them up as much as is mathematically possible.

The one thing Torts sticks to is the idea that he likes certain players at certain positions. He's already stated he wants Nash on the right side, so I'd expect him to stay pretty close to that.

If that is so - expect something like

Hagelin - Richards - Nash
Kreider - Stepan - Gaborik
XX?? - Boyle - Callahan
Rupp - Halpern - Pyatt

Asham, Haley

Expect one surprise camp invitee/signing/promotion

PK & PP duty for Callahan giving him more minutes...

But after one period lines will be shuffled beyond recognition - so the speculation is moot anyways...

Discussing lines is always pointless, especially with Torts as the head coach.. they will be changed up over and over again and back and over again

I could care less (happy Punxrocknyc19 ) what the lines are as long as Nash and Gaborik are separated. I want that scoring threat on separate lines. Harder for teams to match up.

Yes. Would be better suited to guess how many minutes each forward is going to get 1-12.

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that lines are concrete and not subject to constant change. It's more an exercise of guessing who will work best with who, and which players will have which roles. I.e. Nash and Gaborik being split up, Kreider in the top six or not, where does Boyle play, etc. It's just an attempt to analyze what we have and how it might work. Why does everyone have to piss on these threads?

Knuble is getting way too old IMO. So is Arnott, but he seems to be able to get contracts so I'm not ruling him out. I could definitely see them bringing in Dvorak, Sykora, and one of Fehr/Winchester/Bitz. I like Campoli too, but who knows and I see Cheechoo more as an AHL guy to maybe help out CT, but nothing more. Foster = ****

I agree with this entirely. It's more analysis and speculation than true prediction.
