so, are we talking NHL expansion or relocation?

I know GB has denied relocation... but thats just what he said, not what actually is

Imo Bettman will relocate to Seattle so he can have an inflated expansion fee with one (or 2) Canadian teams.

Possible that Bettman knew/saw this coming (he is very close to David Stern)...

Hence all these "Delays" with Jamison to purchase the Coyotes... If the Kings relocate to seattle, there is almost a guarantee that an NHL tenant can also populate it. Key Arena can house as a temporary home, both teams can move to Seattle Arena upon completion... Phoenix Saga = Over, and then expansion to Quebec and Markham... Bam, 32 team league

There is a lot to compete against: Seahawks, Sonics, Mariners, Sounders, plus a university team in the Huskies with a newly renovated stadium. If this team starts off bad like Columbus, it will be too easy to shift entertainment dollars elsewhere.

I thought the city of Seattle kept the Sonics' history/brand like the Browns did?

You know the last year or two of the Sonics in Seattle were sabotaged by Clay Bennett right? He did things to kill the fan base, so people wouldnt be as mad when they eventually left. I dont have many examples off the top of my head, but the team tanked on purpose so people would lose interest.

Do you realize that the NHL is not #1 team in most cities that have multiple sports teams.

Edmonton is going nowhere. That was just Katz blowing smoke up everyone's collective butts to try and get a new arena out of the city.

Yeah that's why I was saying he can't be serious. EDM will never move. Ever.

I hope an NHL team follows though. I'm visiting Vancouver in February and may have to come back next year for a Sonics game.

I was around when the Raiders left for LA and the Colts left for Indy. Here's the big difference though: After the Al Davis lawsuit the NFL makes no effort at all to keep teams in cities.....essentially owners can move on a whim. The NHL will generally fight like hell to keep teams in cities unless it's absolutely an economic impossibility of keeping them there (like Quebec and Winnipeg originally or Atlanta more recently).

hmmm

Article claiming that there are local (Sacramento) groups willing to step up and match the offer to keep them in Sacramento

Actually I was around when Carroll Rosenbloom left LA for Anaheim and the Maras left New York for New Jersey come to think of it.

Agreed. The Oilers are going nowhere and I would hate to see them leave Edmonton even if it was to come to Seattle (NHL will flourish here).

Difference being though Cut', Columbus was an expansion team whereas an intact relocated franchise (especially a good one such as the Coyotes, if that happens) is one to three steps closer to success than a hodge-podge expansion team would be. Speaking upon cohesiveness, I mean.

Not to mention, The Jackets woes rest squarely on the front office management from the onset... that last part being my opinion

Aside from existing sports rivalries with Seattle teams, and aside from recognizing that Sacramento is getting the shaft to facilitate this project, and aside from worry that the Oilers may be targeted...

I really hate the groupthink here which suggests that lattitude correlates directly to hockey success. We've spent over a decade crying about how "southern" markets don't work (disregarding success like Nashville) so we foolishly try to correct that by rushing into Seattle just because it is really far north?

For a while, before this arena was a real possibility, people would constantly suggest Seattle as a potential NHL city, only to be shot down by those who had first-hand experience with the Seattle market. They will have the big three sports covered, plus the best-supported MLS team (with history dating back 40 years) and a MAJOR college program right there in the city.

If the league does move into town, maybe I am proven wrong. In fact, I hope I am for the health of the NHL. I can always use another team to hate, both in this league and that city.
