Just to clarify, they could have fired Burke at any time (if Sportsnet is to be trusted). My guess is this:
Vancouver: "Here is the package want:XXXXXXX,XXXXXX,XXXXXX for RL"
Burke: "Bite me"
Owners: "No we want him. You're fired"
Owners: "Nonis, work your magic on another RL deal"
Nonis: "Okie Dokie"
We will learn within a week which side of the argument Burke was on IMHO. If no deal happens he was pushing for RL and if a deal does happen he was wanting to steer clear of that contract.
I don't think Toronto is going to get "robbed" in a trade for Luongo. I think Toronto ownership likes the idea of trading for Luongo, while Burke doesn't want anything to do with that contract. Remember he was against back diving contracts in this new CBA, and wasn't afraid to voice his opinion about it.
I don't think it is the value of Luongo, more so the actual move of getting Luongo is why Burke was fired.
There was an unsubstantiated rumour floating around that Burke knocked up a reporter; that's why the question about Burke's personal life was asked at the press conference.

The basis of the story being spread is that problems within Burke's personal life have reached a point of embarrassment for the Leafs and that they no longer want him fronting their operation. That apparent story has appeared on at least one website, been broadcast in some places and has been part of regular conversation in the ultra-gossipy hockey world throughout the playoffs.
That was from June. I think where there's smoke there may be fire.
Greg Wyshynski said this: "There must be more to this Burke firing" = "We've all heard rumors about Burke we can't report and we'll just assume they're true now."
The article said Burke has been having marriage problems. During the presser they said Nonis was the guy behind the various transactions so it sounds like he was really doing the GMs job for a while.

Two years in a row, Dave Nonis was the guy on July 1. Last year Burke was marching in the Toronto Pride parade, not a big deal since he was still available. Nothing was going down without him knowing or doing something as needed.
Two years ago I think he was in Afghanistan visiting Canadian troops. Which is valiant of him, intentions were obviously good in that one, that would be wonderful to do any day of the year aside from about 5 - and that's one of them.
It sounds like Nonis isn't the guy long-term either. Regardless, it's so Leafs of the Leafs to do this today
Thoughts on Voracek? Standard Yahoo! public league. FAs available also include Desharnais, Plekanec, MKoivu, Grabovski, Malone, Doan, Stepan, ... I like Voracek for SOG but he didn't play on the PP much last year it would seem.

A suggestion to the moderators: Make a separate fantasy talk thread, since it's annoying having to wade through all of those posts here if you just want to see NHL talk.

I was only half joking when I said 'How do you guys think I did?' Most of the other guys are friends of mine who kind of just recently started following hockey. They know a decent amount about the Flyers but not so much about other players around the league so I kind of took advantage.
