Thanks...

I could have sworn I had heard something about him coming back earlier than expected.

That's good news!

Abdominal tear, I'm guessing 2-3 weeks but nothing official from Staple or others.

I really like the idea of having Martinek around. He's old and very injury-prone, but he may be able to piece together a large part of a 48-game schedule. When he's stayed healthy (which I admit hasn't been often), I've always thought he looked like a solid 3rd pairing dman. Maybe he'll stay healthy long enough to get us to the trade deadline or long enough to get a guy like Ness a few extra months of development in the AHL. And if not, he isn't going to cost anything so there is little risk.

Arthur Staple tweeted earlier that both Ryan Strome and Griffin Reinhart will be on Long Island for training camp.

Griffin Reinhart and Ryan Strome will both make Islanders opening night roster. Visnosky will not play for the Islanders this season. (Lappy13 Predictions 2012-13 season)

Wouldn't mind Martinek getting a tryout. We could definitely use more bodies.

I reallllllly hope they aren't dumb enough to keep Reinhart after training camp closes. I don't see what good comes from the 5 games tryout (or whatever the cba allows in the shortened season) rather than just sending him back to Edmonton and letting him play quality minutes in juniors.. This kid is still a couple years away.

The other two are quite plausible.

great line by Grabs.

JT should wear the golden helmet at camp and then auction it off, donate money to charity or to help support players in their fight against the NHL and their contracts

I'm looking forward to watching hockey, the Isles, JT and Grabs is one of those wildcards that the Isles need production from if they are going to compete this year.

He wasn't good last year. He was great the second half of the prior year. We need "that version" this year. Period.

An update: our defense looks like this...

Streit // Hamonic
MacDonald // Donovan
Carkner //

Options:
-Reinhart has been confirmed to be at camp although I hope he doesn't make the team.
-Martinek, given a tryout should probably get an offer
-Ness was injured last night, taken a stick to the face. Will be out a few weeks
-Wishart will probably not be given a tryout but will be waiting in the wings
-Landry I like but he's not having that good of a season for the Tigers so far
-McIver was also injured last night and didn't practice today
-Cantin is out with a concussion

Boy we are in bad shape. Unless a trade or waiver pickup is made it looks like Reinhart is getting his (now) 5 game tryout until something is done.

Maybe I'm being ignorant but I really don't mind the 5-gamer for Reinhart if that is what ultimately happens(only if Visnovsky doesn't show. If he does then I'd obviously just rather have Donovan take that last spot).

A small taste of the NHL could be beneficial, especially to a guy like Reinhart who already has the size of an NHL player. Get a glimpse of the speed and physicality of the game. Could give him a better idea of what he needs to work on when he's ultimately sent back to the Dub.

One week camp, no exhibition games, most NHLers didn't play competitively the past 4months...the "5" games is not going to be indicative of a true NHL game.

It will take 2-3 weeks for the league to be close to normal play.

I see one of two things happening:

1) You are overrating how rusty these guys will be, and the game will be very similar, giving Reinhart a pretty accurate sense of how competitive/skilled/fast/physical the NHL really is. Reinhart then goes back to Edmonton knowing what aspects of his game he needs to focus/work on the most... or

2) You are right, and it takes more than 5 games for the NHL to start looking like the NHL again. In this scenario, IF the NHL is slower/less skilled/less physical, Reinhart would have a better chance of having success and looking like he "belongs" during that 5-game stint, causing the Isles to keep him aboard for the entire season once the tryout period ends.

I really hope it ends up being option 1...

Wish we could get Palffy over here...that dude just never stops...he's 40 and still tearing his league up. Putting up points in his league at the same pace or better when he left the NHL. He could absolutely be a big addition to any NHL team. Him and Selanne just don't quit. Good for them.

I am trying to recall the last time I heard that comment, about Snow needing to be wowed, for a teenage prospect to stick with the NYI.

Was it Bailey ?

Top Islander picks Strome, Reinhart expected at camp
Reinhart, a defenseman, likely will be in camp for a week and observe a game or two before he goes back to Edmonton . Strome, the offensively gifted center, may yet have a chance to stick with the Isles , but the 19-year-old would need to wow general manager Garth Snow and coach Jack Capuano to earn a top-six forward spot.

Imagine a few injuries go down and Ziggy rides in as a Slovakian apology to play shotgun next to Tavares? Goosebumps.

I wish this were true, sadly I think Reinhart is going to make the team, if Visnovsky doesnt come back to NA.

You said it!

Stated simply - this list is pretty disgusting...

I hear Mark Eaton is still without an employer?:-)

It'll be interesting to see who they bring in. This camp can't really include AHL Dmen, because they've actually got games to play. Have to think the team already knows which of them they want to have anyways.

I wouldn't normally say that Donovan is a gimme, but in light of the current blueline construction, it looks like it's completely his job to have, ready or not (and I don't think he is).

I sure hope Snow has something up his sleeve. Even if Martinek is signed and Donovan and Reinhart stick, no-one in their right mind can think that this blueline will have any chance of competing or staying healthy (alone Carkner and Martinek are walking hospital bills and Hamonic is coming off a concussion) over a condensed schedule played only in the east.

The team simply must bring in other bodies. There are a number of them out there and the team might be well-advised to grab a player or two currently fit and in form over in Europe.

Lord knows that other teams are doing exactly that...

maybe it was misquoted or misunderstood.

I think the forumula is something like this:

If caphit >>>>> salary then WOW
(see Visnovsky, Niederreiter, backloaded contracts to Grabner and Okposo - probably many others)
