The only other option for the Rangers is to take Redden's cap hit this season but not play him. Not in New York. Not in the AHL. Not anywhere.
Put him in bubble wrap, cold storage and call it a year. Make sure his cheques show up on time and wait for the compliance buyout period this summer and cut all ties.
The Rangers are still reviewing the new CBA but sometime before training camps open on Sunday they'll have to come to terms with what's behind one of the three doors.

Hard to think that Redden walks away from what will eventually be a 9.5M severance package after accounting for this year's prorated salary (2.9M) and next year's buyout (3.3M x 2).
We'll be fine with Redden on the cap this year. Dolan pays him whatever he's owed to sit and watch the games at home. We buy him out in the summer, and sign McD, Stepan, and Hagelin.

Well, if we are paying him on the cap, why wouldn't we just keep him as the 7th D-man?

Because if he gets hurt, the Rangers wouldn't be able to buy him out.
Meh. That's a risk I'd be willing to take. The odds of him getting severely injured to prevent a buy-out are very low. So he's basically going to sit out a year and waste more of his career?
If Redden was in the plans,he would be skating with the rest of the Rangers players getting ready for the season. The Rangers had the NYU hockey club coach running practice today and he ran a Torts like practice. Torts told him what to do. Torts is not allowed on the ice. He can't talk to the players until the lockout is lifted.
The CBA prohibits injured players from being bought out. It was that way in the 2005 CBA and it is the same way in the 2013 CBA. There are no injury settlements in the NHL.
Redden can terminate his contract or he can stay home collecting his $2.6M salary waiting for the amnesty buyout in the summer.

Pretty much. Has anyone's career ever fall this drastically (not including a career-ending injury).

He's old, rapidly declining. If he's injured over the entire summer, we are in serious trouble.
If he's unhappy, I'll take his 3 million to sit on my couch.

He was in serious decline for a couple seasons PRIOR to us signing him. It was the most ridiculous deal we've ever made...and we've made a lot of bad UFA signings. lol
I don't even understand why this is a discussion. Wade doesn't sit for a year - he sits for 5 or so months. Then he gets bought out, works out like a fiend over the summer, gets an invite to someone's camp just like Nedved did to ours two years ago (or whenever that was).
That's how he gets his shot - he's got tons of dough in the bank and the ability to give it one more go with no pressure and no strings attached.

Any word on how discussions today went?
Buyout is 3.3 over 2 years....3.3/2 not x 2. He'll get 6.2
