The Gophs basketball team has now moved to #8 in national rankings. Can't remember the last time they were this good. Maybe our first ever Final Four team in 1997? Half my life ago.
Good gawd I can't believe they only have one Final Four appearance. Well Tubby is doing something right. Would that not be THE coolest thing in the world if both the men's basketball and hockey teams captured NCAA titles?
It could be fun this coming couple months for a change in MN sports.
Quit trying to make it out like the Gophers are every Minnesotans team.

They aint mine.
I don't think anyone is saying that, but they're the only D1 college basketball team in the state. Should they be off-limits in the Minnesota sports thread because not everyone likes them?

Pffft.
No one did, but Minnesota revolves around the TC - they are our only state's university with DI football, baseball and basketball teams, and while I am surely a Gophers fan, I am actually a SCSU hockey fan before I am the Gophers, as my family member captained the squad and two of my siblings are alum there. My hero Herb Brooks (a guy whose neighborhood I was also raised; went to same high school and wore the same jersey as he) coached the Gophers, yes, but he did also coach the Huskies as well.
The Gophers are our state's representative in DI football, baseball and basketball. Don't like it don't moan about it, bud.
The gophers looked excellent today at Illinois. I thought this was a good matchup becuase the gophers perimeter D had a good chance of disrupting Illinois' 3 point shots. The D caused so many bad looks from 3, kept Illinois from ever really sustaining a run.
Mbakwe is really starting to take advantage of being 3 years older than most of the Big 10. He hit some tough shots today to create some and one opportunities.

Why is it that fans of programs that aren't the gophers always have to make points like this?
When the Dogs were in the national championship I rooted for them, pulled for them the whole tourny. If the Huskies, Mavericks, Beavers... etc make a run in the frozen four I'll be rooting for them.
Obviously if they play my gophers that's when rooting for them ends...

Mbakwe is definitely starting to get his legs back and is getting better and better each week. He can be a man amongst boys when healthy.
This was a great win but I don't think Illinois is as good as their ranking right now, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they finish outside the top 25 after playing the rest of their conference schedule. I'm not saying that as a result of this game either, I thought it before they played. That being said, it was still a tough road win and I think this Gopher team is for real.

I think the Gophers are a near impossible matchup from Illinois. They rely on open looks from deep, and the Gophers will not give them that. Illinois will be a tough beat in the big 10 this year, but I think this game proved that they'll struggle against defensively sound teams.

They looked really good and tough. Physical play.

Exactly right. UMD was entirely MN boys except for I believe two. It was a MN win. BTW, the UM and UMD are affiliated academically.
Indiana is really taking it to the gophers. I know it would be hard to win on the road against this Indiana team, but damn. Indiana is hitting every tough shot they take and following it up with great defense.
Gophers are going to have to find a new level to even the score.
I have to say I'm really impressed with Indiana. This team is going deep in the NCAA tournament.
They play relentless defense, can rebound... and the hustle... wow. Also, they shoot the ball ridiculously well... despite the gophers playing some pretty good D and challenging almost all the shots the Hoosiers just kept making.
I'll be looking forward to seeing Indiana in the barn.
