There is no way he doesn't bounce back. He didn't deserve to be in the NHL last season. He can't get any worse.

He doesn't even have to return to being a 10-15 goal/35-40 point player. We just can't see the Belanger Triangle again.

Looks like we're getting that on Saturday. Sounds like some teams aren't happy with theirs...

He's been a pretty good bet to get 30+ points throughout his career, but he's also not getting any younger.

How was the best defensive forward on our team unworthy of playing in the NHL last season?

From 2008 to last season, most people on here recognized that our biggest need was a player who could win a faceoff and kill penalties. Belanger did both of those things excellently last season. Any offence from Belanger is just an added bonus to his actual role. We shouldn't base our opinions of him on offensive production.

Maybe my comment was a little over the top but so is calling his play away from the puck excellent. He was -13 while playing on the 4th line and he wasn't on the first unit of the PK. Even Columbus only had 2 players with a worse +/-. That was Nash and Brassard. They were going up against the oppositions best players. Belanger wasn't in that role for us. It was either Horcoff and Smyth or the kids.

He brought good defensive play, the ability to win faceoffs and absolutely nothing more. He was a liability in the offensive zone. He missed so many glorious chances last season that at times he was a momentum killer.

...and lets be honest. Calling him the best defensive forward on the Oilers means nothing. Personally, I'd give it Horcoff but either way...who else was even in the running? Smyth? Jones? Petrell? Who would be in the running on another team? We were terrible defensively last season.

Oilers website says Yakupov to wear # 64 and be seated beside smid and hemmer. Several points about this. Anyone else think smid and nail will be hilarious together? Also, hemmer can sit there and tell nail how to get open for one-timers; I like this seating plan

The main point though, is what is up with # 64 Nail?? Is this a situation where he has been given a crappy number (like at development camps) prior to officially making the team? Or does #64 actually mean something to yakupov? (the obvious being 6+4 = 10). But seriously, 64 is such an ugly number.

He got at development camp and it adds to 10. At this point the Oilers have sold enough of Yakupov 64 jerseys that it isn't going to be easy to change.

Yeah Scott Cullen is an idiot. I can never understand how he continues to be employed despite the horrid job he does at any type of ranking. If you use anything he puts out as a guide, you deserve to lose.

A couple of things that bother me about these lists:
1. Eberle is the second most underrated player on that list. The kid, with the absence of Hall and RNH last year, averaged close to a pt/gm, and none of these lists have him in the top 35. He finished in the top 16 in scoring last year, and was 3rd in even strength scoring while playing 2nd line minutes. I just don't get it.
2. Taylor Hall, while being injured a couple of times during the year where he missed a few games, still managed to score 27 goals, and was on pace to score >35. Having played hockey, I know how difficult it is to come back after injury and pick up where you left off. When players come back after a layoff from injury, it could take several games before they begin to get used to the pace of the game. Just imagine how many Hall might have scored if he had played a full season. Same can be said for RNH...prior to his injury, he was averaging almost a pt/gm.
3. Although I love Seguin, I am getting a little fed up with the love affair the hockey media has with this guy. In my opinion, he's been a bit of a disappointment, and I'll tell you why.
a) He hasn't been able to crack the Bruins lineup as C, and yet people still refer to him as a centreman. Sure Boston is loaded as far as C's go, but shouldn't the guy that's listed as the best Boston player be able to assume his C position on the team.
b) I've seen him in the playoffs for 2 straight years, and with the exception of a couple of games in each of the 2 years, he's done squat. IMO, he's been a complete disappointment.
c) There are reports that he has a hip problem which may cause some issues in the future. While nobody talks about this issues, people always refer to Hall's injuries, including the one that he got stepped on. It just really bothers me.

By the way, both lists have Seguin far higher in the rankings than any Oiler prospects. I cannot wait until we have 3 guys in the top 25 in scoring. I, for one, think that it's conceivably possible that this may happen this year.

Damn. I was hoping for the Flames. The sharks aren't that good anymore IMO, but the Nucks still are a legit contender.

So you're saying the Oilers are the only Western Conference team that doesn't play on Opening night (January 19)?

That seems very, very, exceedingly, unlikely.
