MDZ had a very good year last year but the year before was in the minors, you have to worry about one good year as many hockey players had a good year never to repeat it again.

Is MDZ the type of dman EDM needs, I don't think so I think they need a big rugged dman.

What do you think and if so what would it take, and remember Hall, Eberle, RNH, Yak and Schultz are untouchable?
That would end the MDZ to Edmonton talks.

Typical HF post. Give me your good players. All mine are untouchable. I will however give you 3 tweeners and a 2nd round pick. Deal?

why would the Rangers trade MDZ for anything else other than serious overpayment?

Read this:

Quote:
2013/2014 NEW YORK RANGERS

FORWARDS
Rick Nash ($7.800m) / Brad Richards ($6.667m) / Ryan Callahan ($4.275m)
Chris Kreider ($1.325m) / Derek Stepan ($2.800m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m)
Carl Hagelin ($2.000m) / Brian Boyle ($1.700m) / Taylor Pyatt ($1.550m)
Mike Rupp ($1.500m) / J.T. Miller ($1.244m) / Arron Asham ($1.000m)
Micheal Haley ($0.600m)
Forwards cap hit = $39.961m

DEFENSEMEN
Ryan McDonaugh ($3.800m) / Dan Girardi ($3.325m)
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Anton Stralman ($1.700m)
Michael Del Zotto ($2.500m) / Dylan McIlrath ($1.295m)
Stu Bickel ($0.750m)
Defensemens cap hit = $17.345m

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m)
Martin Biron ($1.300m)
Goaltenders cap hit = $8.175m
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
CAP PAYROLL: $67,147,500
CAP HIT: $65,480,833
BONUSES (deferrable): $887,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster):- $293,333

Some "fat" needs to be trimmed to get under the cap
Contracts like Pyatt, Rupp, Boyle , Asham and Stralman would be the usual suspects here.
Guys like Lindberg, Fast, Kolarik, Hrivik and Newbury would be potential replacement names from within the organization with a lower price tag.
Replacing/omitting someone like Haley or Biron might be options too, although the former creates no actual cap space

This is also presuming that the key RFA contract numbers wind up something like this:
  • MDZ (2013) $2,500m
  • McD (2014) $3,800m
  • Stepan (2014) $2,800m
  • Hagelin (2014) $2,000m

I know that some people, maybe entirely correctly, think that MDZ will get a longer deal with a substantially higher cap hit. Time will tell here. But only if you have a functioning crystal ball then you might be able to give more accurate figures here (and then there would be better ways of using that "ball"). They can of course be debated either way.

The only real roster changes in this above scenario from this year (2013) would be replacing our 2 UFAs in C Jeff Halpern with #1st round draft pick JT Miller and D Steve Eminger with #1st round draft pick Dylan McIlrath. This would however add to the cap hit. There will almost certainly be more/other changes nobody can foresee, and nothing guarantees that Miller and/or Big Mac are NHL ready next year.

Nonetheless - it is within the realm of possibility that we can keep the team intact (resigning all 4 key RFAs) and keeping Ghidorah if we get really creative and get rid of some minor roster fat.

Hemsky and Belanger with a conditional 1st if Hemsky plays less than 100 regular season games over this season and next. Not sure what the new CBA would say about this, of course, but I think that's a deal that makes NYR insanely dangerous to play against. Belanger is a great #3 C as well.

If we were going to add a $5MM contract, why wouldn't we just keep Del Zotto and forget the trade entirely?

The only reason for entertaining trade offers on the kid would be to exchange him for an equal talent who is a little more cap friendly.

And remember, anything worth a damn you can't have. Edmonton wants YOUR best young talent but ss only willing to give up hot garbage in return!

I'd imagine the org would have mild interest in Rundblad as a RHD who could pair with Staal, but if MDZ is on his way out, something proven will be coming back in the deal. Smith isn't really a good starting point.

I seriously doubt the Oilers are going to make a deal for a young offensive defenceman when they've been raving about Justin Schultz all year and acquiring MDZ would be basically send Schultz back to the minors.

If the Oilers set out to acquire a defenceman it will be one of two things: a #6-7 tough veteran defenceman to replace the injured Andy Sutton or a #2-4 veteran minute-munching defenceman to handle the big minutes (a la Jay Bouwmeester). Right now, with guys like Schultz, Petry and Whitney, offensive defencemen who can run the power-play aren't likely to be in Edmonton's wheelhouse.

Also, it's Hockey Buzz.

acquiring another top 4 dman is exactly what the Oilers need to do... It would push a guy like Peckham/Potter out of the top 6 and roll something like:
Whitney-J Shultz
MDZ-Shultz
Smid-Petry

That defence is greatly improved from having to play a guy like Peckham/Potter/Tuebert every night..

I wonder if something around MDZ+Redden coming to Oilers could help make the deal...

Oilers have the room this year and than can buy him out at the end of the season..

NYR are tight against the cap without Redden's cap hit, after this trade they can acquire some rentals to make a playoff push.

Why are these threads always so predictable?

post #1 want A player, but X Y and Z are untouchable

post #2 if X Y and Z are untouchable, so is A

post #3 LOLWTFBBQ, A is nowhere near the value of X Y or Z

Nobody said MDZ has the same value as Edmontons untouchables, but rather that he would be included in a package to get one.

Trades are rarely 1 for 1 swaps.
