Carolina to Make Early Trade

Rutherford says 6-7 players who started season with Checkers could start season with Canes.

For those wondering how Canes can fit in 6-7 players who started season with Checkers, don't rule out an early trade.
The most tradeable players on the roster, IMO, are Joni Pitkanen or Jamie McBain, as both play a similar sort of game and they have Ryan Murphy likely close to making the team. I could see one of Pitkanen or McBain moved out for draft picks, honestly.

Hope Ottawa is in on that, as long as Ryan Murphy isn't the one coming over.

Yeah that's not really much of anything to go on. Just a beat writer speculating. 5 guys on Charlotte are almost certain to be with the Canes when they break camp as it is.

Looks like most AHL clubs are going to lose at least 4 or 5. I wouldn't think they would look to move McBain.

Definitely not for draft picks at least.

Pitkanen and McBain sound like attractive pieces for Detroit and Detroit has a glut of forwards, there might be a deal to be had here.

Something like McBain for Tatar, just spitballing here.

Islanders would love Pitkanen and/or McBain.

While Pitkanen might hold the most value from a Canes standpoint, and I'm not a huge fan of his, I shudder to think of that defense without him (actually, I still shudder thinking of that defense even with him).

Losing Pitkanen would leave a defense of: Gleason, Faulk, Harrison, Corvo, McBain and Sanguinetti/Gragnani/Murphy.

Carolina really doesnt have a deep NHL Dcore, would be suprised to see either of these guys going. Murphy may be close be tough to rely on 3 extremely young dman if you have Faulk McBain and Murphy in the top 6.

I agree that Snow should be kicking the tires.
I read that Martinek's expected at camp and I hope he grabs a spot. But as the #7 d-man, not a top 4.

Carolina would probably be looking for a #2/#3 center in all likelihood.

If we could get a #2, it would allow Muller to play the Staal's together, if we could get a #3, it would really balance out the lineup.

(Hey EDM, McBain for Gagner? again.)

Pitkanen would fit perfectly on the Preds. Blum for him?

Yeah after some quick crunching on the Canes board we came up with a guarantee of at least 5 Charlotte Checkers on the Canes roster, with a very good possibility of a 6th depending on how sharp Boucher is coming off this lockout and his injury last season.

Not too much to make out of this, though if the Canes can land that solid #3 centerman they'll do it, if not even a #2 guy to be able to play a Staal-Staal-Semin line.

Love McBain but those two are really good value proposals.

I'm sure Ottawa's in on this, Murray and Rutherford have been trade partners before and Pitkanen would work well on Ottawa's blue line.

Pitkanen will be counted on to eat up probably 25min a night for the Canes. Unless there is a team that is looking to move a true top 4 D guy that can play 25 min / night and is more defensive in nature in exchange for Pitkanen's offense from the blue line, I can't see a deal that makes sense for him. Corvo sucks, Harrison is best as a 5/6, McBain and Faulk are good young players, but still have holes in their defensive game.

Assuming the Avs negotiations with Oreilly aren't going well, something around Mcbain+ for Oreilly could be an interesting thought.

Hell ******* yes.

What would the '+' be, I'm sure something significant. But I'd be down.

Pitkanen is not being traded. Replacing him in the lineup with Sanguinetti or Murphy is a great way to pretty much guarantee a lottery pick.

More likely IMO is that Boucher will be moved. Then you can add 6 players and still be under the roster limit.

What about something around Pitkänen for Filppula? Our D would suck even more than it does now, but that fills 3 C very nice.
