3rd line center this year, not 2+ years, which is where Laughton is projecting.

And yes, I think right now they could get a better deal (NHL ready players) for edler.

Apparently the flyers believe that he could ready this year.

If that were the deal. We would be better off keeping Edler and taking our chances resigning him. Putting aside the terrible value. Who fills in for the considerable absence Edler leaves? We're giving up the best players by far and getting nothing back. Laughton may be good but not enough to play meaningful minutes on a contender.

To answer your question though. Yes, I do believe we could do better. Gastaud got a first and is widely inferior to Edler.

Edler is arguably a top 15 defenceman in the league. Consistency has been an issue at times, but that tends to improve with age.

The team is in win now mode, so we're looking to get better now in an Edler trade. A 1st and an OK prospect does not help us whatsoever.

Think Voracek.

Impending FAs don't get Voracek. Just doesn't happen.

You are making far too much of the fact that Edler is a UFA at the end of the year. He's still under contract this year, and this isn't the trade deadline (speaking of which look at what Staal garnered in return. I would say Edler's value is comparable).

You aren't getting good, young defencemen for spare parts. Sorry.

An even better comparison would be Brent Burns (I believe Edler won the last poll vs Burns). With a year left on his contract he was traded for Setoguchi, Coyle and a 1st round pick.

Voracek is if anything a modest asking price.

That's fine, I'd prefer to keep Edler.

3.5 years of Voracek > half a year of Edler

I'd much rather have Voracek than Setoguchi, Coyle and a late 1st. Considering we are on a shortened season it makes even less sense. The most I'd offer for Edler is something around Read

Gillis won't trade Edler until the last second if he can't sign him. Gillis is a -VERY- patient man. So you can put your money on Edler not going to Philly cuz no one wants a pending UFA in exchange for their top talent.

The most you'd offer is something around Read. You honestly think that's good value, and a win-now team would go for that? Speechless.

You have to give to get. In any case it's been Philly fans who have been throwing Edler's name in these proposals/speculations - I can guarantee you guys won't get him with offers like that.

A third line center, defensive prospect that tops out as a second pairing defenseman and a 1st?

Equivalent from Philly: Scott Laughton, Erik Gustafsson, 1st round pick

Or you could exchange Read for Laughton.

What type of response would you expect when Coots/Schenn/Simmonds are brought up for Luongo?

The exact same thing can be said for you asking for Voracek. Is that good value for the Flyers when it is entirely possible Edler only plays 48 games?

Again - the Burns trade would be a good analogy. In that case you had a young, promising 1B/2nd line winger, a good prospect and a 1st.

When Seto was traded he had an almost identical PPG to Voracek.

I agree, those proposals are equally ridiculous. I think that was Ray Ferraro who stated that however, I don't think too many Canucks fans are sincerely proposing any of those players for Luongo.

That's a gamble you take. Teams do it all the time. I'm sure the Flyers management would have no issues re-signing Edler.

Something like Read, Grossmann and a 1st for Edler (assuming he agrees on an extension with us) is definitely a reasonable offer.

Except Voracek is three years younger then Setoguchi. So in development terms Voracek's 2011-2012 season was equivalent to Setoguchi's 2007-2008 season. If in three years Voracek regress to where he's a 40 pt player, then yes, Setoguchi would be a good comparison to Voracek.

The Flyers already traded one top 9 forward for a defenseman(JVR for Schenn). I honestly cant see them doing it again. trading Voracek for a defenseman would weaken the Flyers even more on the wings. not saying I dont have interest in Edler. I do, just not at the cost of one our better wingers.
Couturier and Schenn increased productivity could likely make up for the loss of JVR. Still not enough for me to trade Voracek for Edler. I am not sure the Flyers and Canucks make a major deal of any kind, despite these twitter rumors.

It's a gamble
We cannot afford. We have no farm, no prospects, just young nhlers. We cannot trade one of our best away with nobody to replace him.

This is why we don't make good trading partners unless you LOVE making a bad deal.
