acquiring another top 4 dman is exactly what the Oilers need to do... It would push a guy like Peckham/Potter out of the top 6 and roll something like:
Whitney-J Shultz
MDZ-Shultz
Smid-Petry
That defence is greatly improved from having to play a guy like Peckham/Potter/Tuebert every night..
I wonder if something around MDZ+Redden coming to Oilers could help make the deal...
Oilers have the room this year and than can buy him out at the end of the season..
NYR are tight against the cap without Redden's cap hit, after this trade they can acquire some rentals to make a playoff push.
No, they certainly are not. Over $5M in available cap space (counting Redden & Drury but with Sauer on LTIR) with a 22-man team of healthy players at the beginning of the year - which also equals over $20M (prorated it is 4,125 times the annual cap hit at the trade deadline April 5.

Just ran this myself. Please note that this includes The bonus cushion. This was also under the supposition that MDZ winds up with an annual hit of $2,5M (a number Brooks had mentioned previously). Anything higher than the $2,5M caphit figure for MDZ then lowers the cap space by corresponding amount. Lower raises the cap space by similar math. Here is what I got (same result as the first page on this thread):

If Edmonton is going to give up significant pieces for a Dman, it has to be a complete #1 Dman. Wouldnt consider giving up any of Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yakupov, or Schultz for MDZ. If one of them has to go, it needs to be for a player like OEL in a package. Schultz is more iffy, but I want to see what he can do (plus, poor idea to trade away someone who chose your team, especially if you're the Oilers).
I can see why Rags fans think that's a no go. I also cant see why they think Edmonton would consider one of the big 4 for MDZ...
The only thing the Oilers are missing on the blue line is a number 1 defenseman. If their able to land a number 1 defenseman, their defense will be set for many years to come.
post #1 want A player, but X Y and Z are untouchable
post #2 if X Y and Z are untouchable, so is A
post #3 LOLWTFBBQ, A is nowhere near the value of X Y or Z
Nobody said MDZ has the same value as Edmontons untouchables, but rather that he would be included in a package to get one.
Trades are rarely 1 for 1 swaps.
So by that logic. It's ok for the NYR to trade up and get one of the big 4. But it's not ok for Edmonton to trade up and get MDZ.
Edmonton has many good pieces that have value outside of the big 4.
Petry
Jones
MPS

Hemsky
Lander
Klefbom
Marincin
Musil
All these pieces have value to the right team. The problem is the NYR are set at forward and they want to win a cup right now. They have no interest in trading good D for bottom 6 guys and futures. This deal isn't happening.
If you guys are going to make ridiculous offers, at least do a shred of research first.
Anisimov was traded to Columbus in the Nash deal.
Redden isn't an issue.
We have plenty of cap space for this season.
Next season is when it gets a little tight. Redden will be gone via amnesty buyout. Drury's buyout cap hit will be gone. But the cap will be dropping and McDonagh, Stepan and Hagelin will all be up for new contracts. Sauer will be as well, but may never play again. If he does, he won't be getting a raise.
I can't see the Rangers dealing Del Zotto this year. Maybe next offseason if Stralman has a big year.
He logged the third most PP ice time per game in the league last year, so NYR do seem to believe he is crucial to their power play. Aside from Stralman they have no other defensemen with a history of PP production.
Ryan Whitney + makes sense. NY will be serious about a playoff push. Whitney can provide offense, playoff experience and is better defensively than MDZ.
Yes he would be a rental, that is why the + would have to be something attractive. I am not sure what NY's needs are right now. But a deal involving those 2 would not shock me.

With the amount of talent that NY has their PP was 23rd in the league. My guess would be that they want to change that. Adding Nash will make a significant difference, but they may want to change more than that.
I know Eklund rumors are BS. But I have heard before that the Oil were always very high on MDZ.
