Yeah after some quick crunching on the Canes board we came up with a guarantee of at least 5 Charlotte Checkers on the Canes roster, with a very good possibility of a 6th depending on how sharp Boucher is coming off this lockout and his injury last season.
Not too much to make out of this, though if the Canes can land that solid #3 centerman they'll do it, if not even a #2 guy to be able to play a Staal-Staal-Semin line.
I'd be all over that.
Or that.
Love McBain but those two are really good value proposals.
1) Justin Faulk
2) Either Justin Peters or Dan Ellis to back up Cam Ward - Depends on Boucher's health
3) Drayson Bowman (who wasn't assigned to Charlotte because the Canes didn't want to risk waivers, so he's very likely to play on the 3rd line where he ended up at the end of last season)
4) 1 Forward to replace Ruutu who out for the season. Likely to be one of Jeremy Welsh, Zach Boychuk or Zac Dalpe.
5) One #7 Defenseman (as the Canes only have 6 with Faulk). Likely Gragnani, Sanguinetti or a more defensive defensman prospect.
6) Likely that one of Brett Sutter or Tim Wallace would be on the 4th line or as a 13th forward.
Are Hurricanes fans still high on Murphy after watching the last two WJC?
I can't speak for all Hurricanes fans, but I am neither higher nor lower on him than I was when the Canes drafted him. I've always viewed him as a high risk / high reward pick. Because of his size, I have always had concerns that he could become a regular NHL player, but if he can, because of his skill, he could be fantastic.
I don't put much stock in WJC where guys from different teams are thrown together after a few camps and playing against other teams that are in a similar boat. Dougie Hamilton looked terrible in the WJC this year. I still think as highly of him that I did before the WJC as I'm sure Bruins fans do.
He enters the zone at will and makes really good decisions on the PP. I would seriously consider adding him as a 6'th or 7'th D with serious PP time.
I doubt we'd keep him around to have him be a #7 defenseman, better off letting him get top minutes with Kitchener. Next year should be the year he makes the squad, seeing as how Corvo signed a one year deal.
But knowing JR, Corvo will be back with a 2 year deal with a NTC.
Trotz and Poile said they're looking for a vet d-man, likely to play with Weber, and were looking at primarily the eastern conference. Pitkanen certainly fits the bill.

What would we have to add to Pitkanen to get either Smith or Wilson?
My thinking is that it would be McBain moved before Pitkanen. Pitkanen eats up too much ice time, and he has pretty good chemistry with the other Finns on the team.
What Carolina really needs is a 2nd/3rd line center with SOME size who isn't afraid to use it.
Ror would be an amazing player for us to get. It would obviously cost more than mcbain, I'd throw in something else good.
I agree. O'reilly would replace Sutter nicely. I'm not sure what else we would have to add to McBain. We certainly aren't using Boychuk; he's actually putting up really good numbers in the AHL right now..he's been playing a lot better all around.

It's a good thing that guy isn't the GM of the Avs.. IF we trade O'Reilly the main piece would be much more significant than McBain. I'd be more interested in Pitkanen personally (not for R'OR), as we have Barrie and Elliot as RH PMD coming up in the next year or so. What would Carolina want? We'd have to trade a current Dman, and have a glut of forwards
