If the canes are going to make a trade, they will NOT be moving their best defenseman or likely McBain either. Seriously, everybody go look at their defense and tell me they can afford to trade Pitkanen or McBain. We don't really have much in the way of prospects either, certainly no one who can replace either of those two right now. What the canes will likely do is make some room at forward by cutting loose someone like Anthony Stewart or Andreas Nodl who are really just warm bodies taking a spot from a more promising prospect. Only other thing I could see is moving Boucher or putting him on the IR if he's still not healthy and signing Dan Ellis.

They are NOT going to trade Pitkanen, though.
Sorry, but if we can trade McBain for a forward, he's definitely replaceable by Sangs or Gragnani (or Murphy, should his game translate better). Obviously, it'd have to be for the right forward, but I'd have no qualms about trading McBain if it improved the forward group (namely that 3rd line center role).

Pitkanen's another story altogether though. He's not replacable with anyone we have.

Didn't they trade for Jordan Staal already?

My guess

They acquire LW/RW Michael Frolik to improve there winger depth with injury to Ruutu

Frolik for a 4th round pick will be my guess and he fits the Rutherford reclamation project type player.. We have seen Canes have success plenty of times with this type of player move

Yes, but there has been some talk of J.Staal playing 1st line center and E.Staal moving to wing. I doubt this happens, so J.Staal would fill in as the 2nd line center. The thing is we don't really have anyone solid for the 3rd line center position.

Fair enough needing a 3rd line center but the whole Stall brothers playing together just sounds like a gimmick more then a smart move.

I want to ask something while assuming 2 things.

Assuming (#1) that the Staal's fill the roles as the top centers, and assuming (#2) that Pitkanen and McBain are staying put, what are the Hurricanes biggest needs and what is their biggest surplus?

We need a third line center and someone with size and grit.

As far as surplus goes.. we have a lot of young wingers and offensive dmen that still need development.

Matt Cullen for Jamie McBain

No adds from either side.

You previously said you predicted that last year as well. So you are basically saying you were wrong last year. Given that, why should we believe you this year?

Or are you like these "end of the world" guys that just keep predicting it over and over again?

Seriously though, I doubt Pitkanen will be trade early in the season. If the Canes are out of it at the deadline, then maybe.

in that case the Flames and Hurricanes are likely not going to be decent trading partners. So I will refrain from offering something insulting.

edit - Unless the Canes could be in need of a middle 6 winger to allow the young wingers more time to develop. That is the one area the Flames IMO have too much of is middle 6 wingers.

Something like McBain for Tatar, just spitballing here.
I too would expect Holland to be all over this if those two were on the market. I am a big McBain fan, would be especially interested in him.

Ryan Murphy will not make the team any time soon.

Canes fans, after having watched Murphy for years and growing up in the Aurora, Ontario area, I would advise you not to bank the future in this kid. I honestly feel like he's going to be PP guy in the league and may have a similar career path as Ryan Ellis.

I'd be very interested in Jamie McBain. Puck moving d-man who's good on the powerplay, right? What would the Canes want from the Bruins?

Is there any chance that Gleason could be the one moved?

I don't see it. Faulk, McBain, Corvo, Harrison, Pitkanen, Murphy/Sanguinetti/Gragnani. Yikes. Gleason is our only "tough guy" now that Ruutu is injured. I hope JR realizes this and doesn't make that mistake.

Oh, and just realized the master of NTC's (JR) gave him one. So it'd be up to Gleason, and I don't *think* he'd want to move.

Unless its to his hometown Michigan. Gleason+ for Helm is just what we need.

Not to mention that Tom Gilbert is Jamie McBain's clone.

I'm also tempted to say we're interested in Faulk though just for the hilarity of it all.

A 3rd pairing of Justin Falk and Justin Faulk.

Spurgeron is a smurf. He's good but would like to limit his minutes. We still need someone to move the puck.

How about we see what Spurgeon can do paired with Suter this year before we jump to conclusions? I'm all for acquiring a top 4 d-man, but I think the best thing we can do right now is be content with what we have and see what results we get before we go out and do something stupid.
