Saw a few clips of Gomez on RDS today. Probably is a really foolish thing to say; but I loved the determination in his eyes. He seemed to really have something in his facial expression when skating that was distinguishable
Hear it every year with Gomez. He's done. False hope is bad for you.
You'd hope a sports network would base their analysts on, you know, sports. But RDS us it's own special ball of wax. Some things they care about and hire real talent to do (play by play is generally really good, and not just hockey. Analysts... Not so much.)
Yeah, completely backward thinking. If they had a say in things, the Habs would be worse than the Leafs.
The other day, Benoit Brunet said that if any player from the Bulldogs should get a chance to make the Habs, it should be Gabriel Dumont. His reason? Not because of his recent play, useful skills, etc. It was simply (paraphrased): "Because he's Quebecois. The Habs need more on the team."
Just watched the interview with Markov today... can't get over how his english has improved and how more confortable he is with the press! He pretty much tells them to go **** themselves on some questions, and I love it. Wish more players would do it, but I guess he can do it because he's Markov and he's been here forever.

According to Martin McGuire (http://www.985sports.ca/hockey/), only Subban, Emelin and Markov (he is in Montreal though) were not on the ice today in Brossard. Plekanec had his ribs checked in Montreal; he should be ready for the camp. I guess Nokelainen won't be ready for game 1.
McGuire also said that some players (he mentioned Gionta) would prefer seeing Subban, while he is waiting for a contract, in Montreal instead of Toronto.
Btw... double chin no more:

RDS sure has its flaws but sorry: I don't believe you. Link?

I got beat by one post with Kaberle. He seriously looks different than last season. He lost a ton weight that's for sure. My guess? Michel Therrein had a LONG talk with him before the lockout. Kaberle was Therrien's favorite scape goat on l'antichambre, he would talk about him after almost every game.

I remember there was an article from this summer I believe where he said he started training in montreal with Plecks I think right after the season ended. Didn't take much time off at all, said he knows he has to be in better shape. Said the last summer after going so long into june winning the cup and all he took too much time off

McGuire's guess, regarding Kabelre's weight, is 10-15 pounds slimmer. Not bad!

I guess we can expect better determination in his weak wrist shot into the goalie's chest?
Wow, Karberle really does look much different. Who knows if it'll make a difference but he did put up a .5 PPG pace in Montreal even with all the criticism, so a little bit more mobility could make him a genuine offensive weapon.

I thought I noticed an improvement in Markov's English over the last year, I guess the injury gave him extra time. I always love Markov interviews, he really doesn't fear the Montreal media at all.

Dumont does deserve a callup, but more because he was playing great and has potential to be a really nice 4th liner than because he's Quebecois. Because as far as Quebecois players go, I'd much rather see Leblanc stay in the AHL.

while it's unlikely that his apparent (as superficial as chin evaluations can be) fitness level coming into this season is better than last year, I'm skeptical that this will play any role in improving his timidness with regards to contact which made him such a liability in the defensive zone...
that said, if the humiliation of being a healthy scratch, then being traded for an expiring contract, then being ragged on all year by the media in a hockey mad market, did in fact get to him and challenge his athlete ego (make no mistake, every elite athlete, no matter how soft or seemingly disinterested, has a pretty big ego at some level, it's a requirement to perform at such a high level), perhaps we will benefit from an athlete pushed to personal heights at the emotional level.
No doubt that Kaberle has immense skill and vision on the ice. If he's motivated and pushed himself through disciplined work this past extended off-season, he might be able to come in and be a very effective contributor.
The key will be who Therrien pairs him with, and how he gets used. Keeping him away from physically imposing forward lines & pairing him with a d-partner with enough skating/skill to complement Kaberle's strength in those departments (wouldn't mind seeing a Kaberle-Diaz 3rd pairing or Kaberle-Weber... both would be physically underwhelming, but if used strategically against softer top-6/9 trio's or against 4th line scrubs, their skating/passing/attacking attributes might very well mitigate the "soft as butter" issue).
either way, since we are likely stuck with him this year, the hope is obviously that he can regain some of the effectivness that at one time had him ranked among the top10-15 offensively minded dmen in the league. If he can approach that kind of effectiveness while not coming across as a very expensive PP specialist, perhaps by the deadline or even next summer we actually have some sort of trade market for him & can translate him into a more useful asset (b/c let's face it, even if he returns to a solid level of play, with Subban/Markov already in place as high-salaried offensively skilled dmen, and Diaz/Weber on the roster as much cheaper depth alternatives in that mould, even a solid version of Kaberle is redundant and wasteful at his cap hit... far better to turn him into other assets (picks/prospects) and target that money elsewhere.

Yeah, the part where he goes "Put yourself in my position, what would you do?" is exactly what a lot of NHLers wouldn't have the confidence or skills of active participation to do during an interview, rather than just bounce back with the same canned replies hockey players seem to have. Awesome to see.

Kaberle texted PK about training or something once the lockout was lifted according to PK himself. If kabs is reaching out to PK, I see this as a good sign and he looks noticeably slimmer.
It all points to positives imo. If we can get pre 2011 kabs at 85% he'll be well worth the money.
I laughed this morning on my way to work. TSN690 had their Twitter question of the day "What role do you see Gomez playing on the team this year?". One guy answered "Running a scoring clinic for the Bruins' and Leafs' prospects"
