Agreed.

It's not like he can't be called up later. He might still even be in training camp.

But if there's one prospect who has both earned a call up and could be a needed roleplayer on this team, it's Ben Smith. It's stupid that he wasn't in the first round of call-ups.

Andrew Shaw makes Ben Smith redundant. Who do you leave down if you call up Smith?

Smith definitely needs to be our go to guy for an injured forward in the top 9. If it's 4th line, then I'd consider Beach. If it's Toews, then Pirri. That's how I'd do it.

I bet Jimmy Hayes is the first call up. You can't teach 6'6.

Yeah, that's true, Hayes is a solid option as well. I really think Smith deserves another chance though; he's doing very well this year.

These other guys are better options for this team than Frolik. Fro's gotta go.

Andrew Shaw would actually be a great place to start, considering that he's been so inconsistent in Rockford. The only thing he's done better than Smith this season is get suspended.

Bollig is another one who I could absolutely do without. He's not an enforcer, he doesn't protect anyone. He's a sideshow fighting act.

Smith has a ridiculously high shooting percentage in Rockford this year so that may be a little bit of fools gold.

Shaw has done it at the NHL level, Smith has not. Bollig sure tuned up Ryan Reaves after he took a run at Mayers. He also went after Danny Heatley and then beat someone up on the Wild who had to step in to save Heatley.

Then I guess we should put Shaq in the Indianhead.

Meanwhile, where was Shaw in the playoffs? Suspended.

Where was Bollig after Hossa got killed? Missing.

Ugh, he went after Torres and got 2 minutes for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct because Torres turtled and ran from him. How short are peoples memories?

Including playoffs and considering some of these games he played limited minutes, he has 6 goals in 26 games. That prorates to 19 goals. I'd love to have a 20 goal scorer in Frolik's spot. Smith has the goal scorers touch, you don't see that very often from a role player but sure enough, he has it. He should be on the third line. Send Frolik out for a backup goalie or a pick. Make Hayes and others beat out Smith for his spot.

Shaw and Hayes have merit

But Smith was disaster last year in callup and Beach is a bust

Frolik is more reliable defensively then any of the other options as well

On the 3rd line instead of who? Shaw? Bickell?

Let the two of them switch off with the other going to the 4th.

Are you really gonna hold that bull **** ruling that was due to an obvious flop against him.

Let's not act like Smith has accomplished more in the NHL because Luongo can't stay on his damn feet. He had a nice little stretch there, but we're long past it.

So tired of the 'where was he in playoffs?' argument we get so often on this board. It's a small sample size. I'll take Shaw who has done it over a much longer period of time.

So you'd put Shaw on the 4th line despite him having 23 points in 37 regular season games as a rookie in favor of a guy with 6 points in 19 games?

Was he contributing or not? Mike's flop or not, the answer is no.

I'm not down on Shaw. When he cares, he's good at what he does, but I don't think he's earned the call-up over Smith at all.

I'm not sold on Shaw as anything more than a 4th liner, need to see more. I'm more sold on Smith. If Shaw keeps it up, obviously, he is the better option but skill wise, he is inferior to Smith. Shaw needs to show he can keep playing the way he has while holding up physically. You don't see many players like Shaw do what he does over the course of multiple seasons so I'm hesitant.

Your basing this off up 1 and a half games! Again: Context, sample size, too small to make judgment......

Based on what I witnessed in RFD this season, Smith looked hungry, was working his butt off, playing with heart and was scoring. He also looks stronger on the puck this season. If he can translate that at the next level, voila. If there is only one spot to be had between them, I think it is a toss up between Smith, Shaw and Jayes.

I can see Q giving Frolik another shot to start the season, especially since he will be in game shape. That leash will likely be a short one however. We cannot afford to play him if he can’t score.
