I really think that if the Flyers can put a decent defense in front of him and have their forwards learn some semblance of defensive play (Jagr, Briere, Giroux, Simmonds, Hartnell are all lacking on the defensive side of the puck) Bryz will be much better. He was coming from a Tippet system in PHX.

#Devils' Ilya Kovalchuk just told Sport-Express.ru that he'd be on a plane to NA on January 15. The saga has ended

Sorry if this has already been brought up.

I've read a lot of stuff where people complained that Burke signed and drafted too many Americans. Anybody think this had something to do with his departure?

Currently watching the Isles/Flyers 80 Cup final on NHLTV.

Had never watched anything but Nystroms series winning goal from this series until today. First Isles goal was high sticked by Potvin, their 2nd was offside by a mile and no call. NOW I understand why Flyer fans are the worst when it comes to the officiating, they were totally robbed in that series.

I'm sure Don Cherry would say it did.

I doubt it. Toronto isn't Montreal. I think most Leafs fans just want to see their team compete for a championship. I understand that Leafs fans enjoy seeing kids from the GTA play for the Leafs but I've never really sensed a serious anti-American or anti-European vibe from that fanbase. Otherwise, they never would have brought in Burke or Wilson or traded for Kessel.

They should be better as far as team defense is concerned just by subtracting Jagr and increasing the roles of Schenn and Coutourier, which you know is going to happen this season. Their defensemen are still weak though.

Not really that unfair. Their two best forwards are better than our two best forwards...and they have a solid goalie, although I'll take Hank hands down. Our D is better. We can argue all day whether they should be ranked ahead of us...but they are going to be tough. They are probably the team I worry most about beating.

Maybe the team that won the Cup, and whose roster hasn't changed has something to say about being #1. Just maybe.

Their defense is below-average and they downgraded their roster in the Staal trade. Rangers improved.

What we have is at best a bad knock-off of Pittsburgh's powerhouse offense. Its our Good forwards, good D, and star goaltender combined that give us the quality we have.

Agreed. But in recent history they have had our number. Hopefully things have changed in our favor.

When doing these rankings you are also assuming teams wont have injuries. Crosby played 22 games last season and yet they finished 1 point behind us. I have no issues seeing Pens at #1.

Not to mention they fared quite well against us without him in the lineup.

they also had Jordan Staal last year. They don't this year. Staal is a damn good center.

Yeah but they got Crosby from the start. They're the team to beat like every year since they have the 1st and 2nd best players in the league, both who are in a league of their own. It's like if Mario and Gretzky were on the same team in the late 80's.

With Crosby in the lineup, they didn't downgrade their roster by much. Jordan Staal is not a much better 3rd line center than Sutter is. 3rd line C is just not Staal's ceiling.

It's good that Pens are talked about IMO. Hopefully it makes us go somewhat under the radar. Rangers can just quietly go about their business.

Pittsburgh is the team to beat in the East. That defense is not built for the playoffs, however. Fleury has to stand on his head for them to go far.

It is definitely close, but I feel like Hank, our D, and the addition of Nash are enough to put us above them. If they were so confident in flower they wouldn't have signed Vokun. Mostly, I was just surprised to see them 1st especially after their performance against the flyers last year.
