Bruins Sign Jay Pandolfo

Bruins invite Jay Pandolfo to training camp

Quote:

Jay Pandolfo has been invited to Bruins training camp, according to two sources familiar with the decision.

The ex-Boston University star played for the Islanders in 2011-12. Pandolfo scored one goal and had two assists in 62 games while averaging 10:55 of ice time per appearance.

Pandolfo has been practicing with the Bruins all week, both at Ristuccia Arena and at BU’s Agganis Arena. On Friday, Pandolfo wore a Bruins practice jersey for the first time. When asked about the uniform, Pandolfo said he was given the Bruins sweater to fit in with the rest of the players.

The Burlington native played for Claude Julien in 2006-07 when the current Bruins coach stood behind the New Jersey bench. The 38-year-old Pandolfo is a defense-first left wing who can kill penalties.

The Bruins considered inviting Pandolfo to camp prior to the 2011-12 season. Instead, the Bruins invited former Washington captain Chris Clark. The Bruins didn’t sign Clark.

Let the casting call for 3rd line LW begin. I don't see how Pandolfo beats out Bourque for that job considering their relative levels of preparedness coming into camp, but if Bourque isn't better than Pandolfo next week then he'll never win that job.

Niederreiter - Reasoner - Pandolfo was one of the worst offensive lines in the history of the NHL last year, the scored three goals combined. To say Pandolfo has nothing left is putting it very mildly.

If we were looking for a local guy with nothing left in the tank why not invite Roenick or Amonte? They are probably both still better than Pandolfo.

Says more about what they think of who they have IMO. Pandolfo is a gamer, but more than likely past his prime.

Disagree. Pandolfo sucks but 'to much young talent we can give time too'? We don't have any which is the reason we are inviting a guy like Pandolfo.

Doubt much comes of it, but can't hurt to bring him in. I grew up in the same town as the Pandolfos. Played some street hockey with Jay when I was a kid. He was 5-6 years older than us, saw a couple of us out playing one day and just joined. He was a big deal at that point even, so it was pretty cool. Was really nice and took it easy on us, though he had a howitzer for a shot and unleashed it a few times.

Knew his younger sister and brother better than I did Jay, but they were all good people, nice family. I also remember when the Shawn Bates-led Medford team knocked the Jay Pandolfo-led Burlington team out of the Super 8 in, I think it was 91. Panda was a big deal at the time, one of the better HS players in the state, but Bates was hands down the better player at that level.

I disagree but that's ok. I think they are inviting him just to say to the young guys you have to earn the spot its not going to be given to you. But at the end of the Day I bet Pandolfo never plays a game as a Bruin.

I know it's probably not going to happen, but I'd love to see Max Sauve get the job. If he can stay healthy, I think he has the tools to play in the NHL.

The Bruins already have Jordan Caron to cover the defensively responsible but slow and not great offensively quota. Pandolfo is a decent team guy who just serves as a body in camp, if Clark didn't earn a contract I don't expect Pandolfo has much of a chance to but maybe the young guys learn something with him around for a week.

One school of thought that I recall hearing / reading during the lockout was that in a shortened season teams can't afford spending too much time evaluating whether their prospects are NHL ready; better to go with the veterans you know.

Caron, Knight, Spooner, Bourque, McDermind. Rather see them get some time then Pandolfo.

They should know Pandolfo has nothing left, so don't waste their time on him.

Sadly everyones career must come to an end, and his has reached that point.

Can we maybe atleast root for the guy instead of throwing dirt on his casket? I remember quite a few people burying Recchi and Rolston as well.

I think they are trying out Pandolfo to see if he's got anything left in the tank and in case Bourque makes the team so they can sign JP send him to Prov for some vet leadership. It'll also be good to have a vet as a plan b in case of injuries because they are going to happen.

good point Lou. Sometimes I just get excited to see some of the young guys get a shot but your right on with the Recchi/Rolston examples.

I don't think Pandolfo will either, but young talent isn't a position of strength. I would feel more comfortable with legitimate NHL signings instead of rolling with our underwelming 'prospects'.
