my worry is this deal to buy the kings will far apart which then we would have to wait EVEN longer before Seattle gets a NBA team and for the arena to be built. Good grief waiting to find out if its gonna happen or not is gonna stink.

Yeah but it wasn't the usual Canadian pundits, it espn and the local papers and NBC sports, etc. That's not good.

You just said it yourself: Adding Canadian teams via expansion rather than relocation is sound BUSINESS decision. Whether Bettman's ego is too big is either incorrect or moot.

That media narrative Munch mentioned would (and probably SHOULD) prevent him from allowing another Southern team to move out of the South. I think the best thing to do is add expansion teams in Seattle and Quebec and try to make inroads with Houston as the Coyotes' destination if/when the new owner wants to cut bait.
If I told you in 1998 that Raleigh, Nashville and Columbus would get teams before the city with the 5th most corporate dollars in the US, you would laugh at me.

NESN had a poll asking its viewers if Seattle should get a NHL team:

http://nesn.com/2013/01/should-the-c...t-an-nhl-team/

Yes: 86%
No: 13%

Here's a thought - if there isn't a portable NHL team available when the new arena opens, perhaps Hansen's group might think about purchasing an AHL franchise to pair with the NBA team, like the Spurs and Cavaliers have? AHL to NHL worked eventually in Winnipeg...

(and before anyone says "it's too far from the rest of the AHL", probably... but Seattle WOULD be the only bus-trip-rival for the Abbotsford (BC) team, and could help further the AHL's presence on the West Coast -- just speculating here).

Not a good idea with the two WHL teams in the area. NHL or bust for the new arena. Seattle wants the NHL, not a minor league team. The AHL would be the #3 hockey team in area and would take slots away from more profitable events at the arena.

Exactly. Always look at what the site is when doing polls.
I posted it because I view it as a positive for the market. Not to say that QC will get a team before Seattle.

Agreed.
I plan on getting a Nordiques Peter Stastny jersey if and when Quebec returns.

Man that Seattle arena its insanely cool! they have this design that takes the heavy precipitation of the area and converts it into potable water and irrigation water.

Literally the coolest arena design I've seen yet.

About the AHL idea, I'd pass on it, too...

...but this is where the current Portland issues throw a monkey wrench into the mix.

Bill Gallacher bought the Winterhawks from a group that had just about driven the franchise into the ground AND out of town. From there, the Winterhawks got good fast. That helped pick up attendance, but it also started the rumors around the WHL.

Sure enough, there was a contract in a traded player's hands that wasn't the copy sent to the league... only in the manner of arranging for parental flights to Portland, but bad enough to get the sanctions most of you have heard about.

The sanctions caused Gallacher to ask to delay a city council vote on renovations to Memorial Coliseum, which is a good chunk of the reason why people around here have referred to the sanctions as a "death penalty." The council vote is now delayed until March, after a supposed February hearing with the WHL regarding the sanctions.

This has exposed a small market v large market rift in the WHL. There's the Canada v US issue (which exists in lesser form with the Dub) that could factor into the equation...

...so Portland might not be in the WHL for long. Could that be the AHL's opening? Possibly? I don't know. There's not a lot of viable options.

The Seattle Thunderbirds have not drawn as well as they'd hoped in Kent. If the NHL does arrive, I tend to think they're done. The Portland-Seattle rivalry IS a draw, is intense, and may have to be portable.

Key point 525m is only for 65% of the team aka maloofs will get 260m in the sale. Unless the purchase price is much lower for only 65% of that 525m minus the debt.

The Coyotes are being played as a pawn behind the scenes between Seattle and Sacremento's hard ball negotiations. The Maroofs are using so called local investors to up the anty from Seattle. Seattle is using the coyotes as a 2 for 1 deal (NHL and NBA) to extract as much funds from the city of Seattle to pay for a new arena. Phoenix is the blueprint of success that seattle corporations will use to bankrupt a city for corporate profits

I agree.

Hansen is investing so much money into the arena and team it could end up close to a billion to get the sonics back no way there would be bankrupcy.
