There's a report in MTL saying PK Subban has agreed to a 4yr, $22M deal. His agent tells me that's not true. Said: "No deal has been done."
I find it silly how people are jumping the gun. Contracts CAN NOT be signed right now...
Rod Francis @InRodWeTrust990 Can't report as fact, but hearing from 1 credible source, would not be surprised if #Habs announce new deal for PK Subban 4 yrs, 22 mil
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a 4 year deal take him to UFA? If so I really don't like this at all. That being said, it is just a rumour so it's hard to judge yet.

In a previous post, I showed that this deal would represent 8.55% of the cap at most. Assuming that your entire top 6, your top 2 Ds and your starting goalie have the exact same deal, you will have 23% of the cap left to build the rest of your team. This is the worst case scenario (next year).
Sounds like maybe some guy spitballed a number on some show, then others jumped on that as a "source". Seems to be the way these things work in this twittered up world.
4 yrs would be really dumb for the Habs. I don't mind the $5.5M, but as others say, 2 or 8 are the "sensible" terms for the Habs. The contract structure I'd support on a long term deal is more like $5-5-6-6-7-7-7-7M. That's $50M/8yrs or a $6.25M cap hit. But the first 4 years is the same as this. The next 4 anticipate both a rise in his impact and a recovery and re-inflation for the league in general. That's a much better deal for the Habs than $22M/4yrs would be. And if PK wants term, that ought to be better for him too.

Does not mean an agreement is not in place. A deal can only be done after ratification.
PK is no fool. Habs sign him he wins. Habs trade him he wins. The poop storm that would be created by trading him would cost more than giving him the money. IMO
What a bad contract if true........That mean we would maybe lost PK in less then 4 years......That would be a first bad move by Bergevin.
Itd be more than bad. Four years is the worst term MB could sign PK to as that just eats up his RFA years. Anything else would be better for term. MB seems pretty sharp and I just cant see him doing this.
Subban is, by far, one of my favorite players but if he refuses to accept the team structure, I would be willing to ship him out of town. Subban must not forget that the (that the... is it acceptable in English? It sounds weird... ) contractual team structure's main objective is to build a contender. The question is not "Does the team see me in its future" (as he mentioned on Twitter); it is "Is Subban willing to make a sacrifice in an effort to build a contender"... imo!
That's ridiculous. You don't ship out a player because he wants a longer deal than 2 years. I mean, if it's an unproven player with doubts, then okay, I get it, but if it's a star player, you freaking negotiate and if you need to budge, so be it.
You also can't expect every player to make a sacrifice, they have every single right to want the most possible cash.
You never negotiated a contract for employment? You negotiate to get what you feel you deserve, especially when you know you are worth every penny you're asking.

God the media in Mtl surrounding hockey is garbage.
So, I'm walking down the streets, a guy in a suit walks by talking on his cell phone saying PK for 4y at 5.5M. That may or may not be a credible source...
Awesome reporting..

Its really impossible to tell.
PK also has to agree to the deal. PK might not want his contract to go into free agency.
There is also huge risk in short term deals especially with young players of Subbans potential. The likelihood his cap hit increases on short deals is almost a guarantee. If Pk keeps signing short deals, by year three his agent will be telling him to only accept 1 year so he becomes a free agent.
But you'll have him for sure for 4. You guys are hard to please.
It's about RFA status. In 4 years he will be UFA, in 2 years he will be RFA. The problem lies with do we give a long term deal and he never becomes worth it. It's possible that he becomes a mega superstar on a 2 year deal where we will have to pony up maybe league maximum. A lot of risk versus reward. Subban will be signed, but I fear 4 years may be a bigger risk seeing as in 4 years he can talk with any team regarding a new contract.
