I'm sure this has been said already, and I apologize if I am repeating everyone

However, does anyone else hate the term of this contract? I have no issue with the $, but 4 years?! I mean, it should either be 2 years (to keep him at RFA status) or 8 years (to eat up as many UFA years as possible)

Signing him for 4 years just means that he could possibly walk away from the Habs as soon as he enters his prime. Anyone else afraid that would happen?

It is why Subban asked 4 year (or a very long and very costly contract), Bergevin was just force to sign subban and break the way the Habs usualy do a bit on this.

Do you think PK will walk after the 4th year? Too early to tell for sure, and I know he always talks about how he loves Montreal and thats where he wants to stay all career.

But man, what a scary contract to sign a guy like PK to, it gives him all the leverage in the world to just completely screw over the team

PK is a smart guy that understands the business so yeah I can totally see him walking away for more money in 4 years time.

We just don't have much leverage ATM and PK knows it.

It does guarantee PK will be playing his ass off because if he has a mediocre 4 years his payday will vanish when this contract does.

With the new CBA, aren't players UFAs after eight years of service? So Subban would still be an RFA after these four years..?

I wouldn't mind that deal at all.

I'm a PK believer, but i think the club would be wise to make him earn the big deal. I think he could have a mediocre season this year anyways.

4 yrs $22 mln reported for #Habs @PKSubban1: "Nothing could be further from the truth & I capitalize all of that" says agent Don Meehan

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs

Agent Meehan on @PKSubban1 "contract", through laughter: "Aren't you in a wonderful city where the deal has already been struck?"

If he does screw over the team, we can trade him at any point. Even with all the craziness he will still have market value, so I don't see it as a risk.

The more he makes elsewhere as an RFA (assuming he isn't re-signing), the greater the compensation.

What I meant was, if he gives the team no indication that he wants to leave, and then come free agency time in the summer, he decides to play hard ball. At that point the trade deadline, along with his contract will be over and we couldn't trade him.

I'm aware we can trade him at any point in the contract, but if he is playing well and doesn't give any indication he wants to leave at the end of his contract, why would MGMT trade him

Then don't put yourself in that situation as a franchise. The summer before the contract expires if it's 4+ years, you try to extend him. If he says no for whatever reason, you consider trading him.

I found this:

As of 2008, any player whose contract has expired can declare himself an unrestricted free agent if he is at least 27 years old or has at least seven years of service as an NHL player.

Between 2005 and 2008, the age of unrestricted free agency declined from 31 to 27. More details here.

I could of sworn the habs organization was against this for whatever reason in the past. It is clear they don't care after the Max contract. Does anyone else remember their being something about no extensions?

It was one of Gainey's stone age policies.

Was it only Gainey or did it pre-date him?

I can't recall that far. That's 10 years ago and more. Hah.

Keep in mind back then UFA was at age 31 so there was less of a rush to sign players.

Ya that's true. In some respect you can say that you had the player for their prime (27-31). Now they can be free at the moment in which they should offer the best hockey of their lives. Lucky them
