Vancouver - Montreal

Ballard, Connauton 5th, for Diaz, Nokelainen, 1st/2nd, Gomez

Montreal pays for some of Gomez's salary
Vancouver stashes him away in the AHL and buys him out next year.

Oui? Non?

Why would Montreal trade their first (or second) in a deep draft year, for Ballard and Connaughton, to temporarily get rid of Blowmez? And than add a solid piece like Diaz?

Habs have Gomez's contract bought out already, just waiting for the date to hand it to him. They won't be giving up prime assets to let someone else take him. Terrible proposal.

Gomez is a prime candidate for buy-out, no need to give up a 1st and Diaz to have someone else do it...

Not sure why either team would do it.

Montreal - not like they need that cap space (they still have 6 mil ish to resign Subban if needed), at least not until next offseason when the prime free-agents may become available, by which they can buy out Gomez as mentioned earlier by others.

Vancouver - this trade in no way improves Vancouver's win-now situation. If anything they want more cap to take up a quality player, especially when burying players in AHL will cost you cap space eventually.

No from MTL's POV and not sure Vancouver could even do this and stay below the salary cap. You realise 'stashing Gomez in the AHL' equals a cap hit of six and a half million dollars, right?

Zero chance Montreal trades away a high pick to get Ballard, Connaugton and a 5th...

Also, why do some people think the Habs will give up valuable assets to get rid of Gomez????? He will be buried in the minors this year and bought out next year without any effect on the cap. Simple comme bonjour.

This trade doesn't help Montreal in any way and , other than the high draft pick, doesn't help Vancouver either.

BTW Nokelainen is injured (back).

Chances are that the Habs are getting another top 5 pick... why on earth would they trade that for some cap space that they were going to buy out anyway? It's not going to count against their cap and they're rich...

This deal is crazy.

in the new CBA, if you dump a player on a one -way contract in the AHL, his contract still count agaisnt the cap.

Quote:
He also reports any salary over $900K on a one-way contract demoted to the minors will still count against a team’s salary cap. “To be clear, one-way deals in AHL totalling the minimum salary plus $375,000 are exempt from cap”, he writes.
So dumping a player in the AHL for cap purpose is now a thing of the past.

1. Montreal would never do this
2. Only the first $900,000 of his cap hit can be buried, which means this would blow up Vancouvers cap situation.

Or we just accept his cap hit for this year, buy him out next year and keep our high draft picks and players.

To me, Diaz > Ballard, 1st > Connaughton, and so no deal. Gomez is an easy buyout now, so no need to take any negative value on him in a deal. It's a complete non-starter, IMHO.

I'm a fan of both teams and I don't see that happening. Habs need Diaz more than they need Ballard and Connauton is redundant, with Beaulieu a year or two away, and with Subban, Markov and... Diaz at the NHL level for the PP.

Yah, with compliance buyouts, there is little to no chance Montreal pays another team to take Gomez. Especially if it involves our picks AND taking Ballard back. Pretty easy no, nothing to build on, especially if it involves our draft picks.

I agree with Montreal fans, no way.

I mean aside from cap and value implications and all other perfectly legit reasons not to do this aside, Diaz for Ballard is what it comes down to, and I think we just got Ballard to buy into our system last year. I'd rather not restart that process.

Compliance buyouts nixes any need to ship off Gomez with incentives. Even setting aside the lop-sided value, Montreal is too much of a question mark, and could well end up with a high pick. There is nothing we would be willing to toss in that would satisfy the risk.

If Ballard continues to struggle. I would see if they'd take a pick - 2nd perhaps - for Weber/Diaz.

You wouldn't take a 1st Round (top-20 for sure) + Diaz for Ballard? lol what?

Montreal doesn't need to get Gomez off the books this year (barring us trading for more salary cap). We sure as heck aren't trading away pics to save us money either. Pretty silly trade here I say.

I thought contracts stashed in the AHL count against the cap now?
