Like Mark Fraser, I doubt he plays a game for the Leafs. Marlies are about to lose 2-3 of their best defensemen.

Maybe people are just SO used to seeing Tor fans giving up nothing & getting something in the majority of proposals...

Who said that? No one is surprised that players and teams are on the verge of signing and trading the moment it's legal.

He's going to be playin in the minors. Holy. Calm down its an AHL signing.

Just like people said leafs weren't going to like Mark Fraser, and he's been a staple on a top Marlies team.

Burke did the same thing signing a fringe NHLer in Lebda and it was not pretty for the leafs. Hopefully he ends up in AHL but with Ranger, Fraser, Blacker, Kostka, Holzer, Syvret etc I'm not sure what this is about. Check out some of his great work on the NYI

Mottau is atrocious. Glad Chiarelli didn't have enough time to sign him before the leafs did.

Good depth signing.

Every year Burke loaded up on D in the off-season to turn have the dominos to trade a D later on and address other team issues. (Beauchemin, Kaberle, Aulie)

Leafs D

Phaneuf
Liles
Gunnar
Gardiner
Holzer
Komisarek
Franson
Kostka
Blacker
Ranger
...

I'm not concerned about signing Mottau, if he can out play enough guys to get minutes that's fine by me. But will probably stay as a 2nd pair guy for the Marlies.

No way this is to an NHL contract, makes absolutely 0 sense. Guaranteed Marlies signing.

Not really / at all. Mike Mottau is an NHL defenceman, he hasn't played a ton in the last couple years, but the Leafs are short on defencemen who can play a stay-at-home role, and he can.

It's a good low-risk signing for a guy who Holzer will have to beat out for a spot.

Likely a signing to replace an AHL defenceman who will get called up when the season starts

Ranger? Holzer? Gardiner? who knows

Most likely to replace Holzer on the Marlies if he can make the big club as he's expected to.

I think it is a signing for the NHL team. He is a good guy who won't complain about being on the bench. He is a good teammate and has a great attitude and will probably play 5 games during the season unless there is a rash of injuries on D.

Ranger isn't Maple Leafs property, is he? He's signed to an AHL contract, doesn't mean he's going to sign with the Maple Leafs.

Yup. He's only signed with the Marlies, but in his interviews he makes it very clear that Toronto is where he wants to be. Although, personally I don't think he is interested in moving up to the NHL, and is looking to stay with the Marlies.

Oh god, don't remind me. Shades of Tomi Santala....

Even Gillis has a revolving door of 4th liners. Drives me nuts.
