Alt has struggled this season at Minnesota. Don Lucia has not been happy with his play.

Seems a little weird that Alt would be included in this deal. Then again I have no idea what a Luke Pither is...

Wouldn't be all that shocked if Alt became the best player out of this deal; granted he's a ways off right now. Physical defenseman that has some mobility to his game both in terms of moving the puck and skating. Will never be an offensive defenseman, but once he settles down some I think he has a very good chance to be a reliable shut down guy in the NHL down the line.

While definitely true, he's still the most valuable piece in the entire deal. By a rather good amount. I know it was to make room for Ellis but I'm still trying to figure this one out.

From Corey Pronman about Alt just a few minutes ago:

Quote:
The Flyers traded for defenseman Mark Alt, my thoughts on Alt: He’s what one NHL source describes as an athletic big man, who skates well and moves very well for his size. He’s got a high-end physical game due to his size and willingness to lay the body. Alt is still pretty raw though, trying to figure out the game in his own end and make better decisions overall. He also doesn’t bring much in terms of point production, although there’s a little offensive upside in him. For now I’d qualify him as a low end prospect.

Yeah, that's where I'm at also. Have no idea why Rutherford included him in this deal. It's not like Boucher has some terrible contract...it's $1M for 1 year. Don't like this one.

Weird deal indeed.

Boucher was a good guy here. It's too bad about the injury problems. Good luck to him as he winds down his career.

I was fairly high on Alt's raw physical ability, but he seemed to hit a wall at the beginning of last season. Hadn't really thought about him in quite a while.

This may be a case of the Hurricanes just needing to clear roster spots more than anything.

That's about the only thing that makes sense.

Whatever Alt's limits or stagnation, he's still a much better prospect than Pither, and Boucher, when healthy, is a serviceable goalie. He was and remains immensely popular here.

Don't know if this signals some injury concern with Leighton, or whether it is just a precautionary move, but it is hard to find fault on the Flyers end here.

Boucher must not have been in the Canes plans this year so he was essentially free. Pither for Alt might be the real deal but who knows if either ever plays in the NHL.

Doesn't even work for that though as Alt's not under contract. Both Pither and Boucher are. I could understand this deal had it simply been Pither for Boucher straight up.

As I speculated on the Canes board though, maybe Alt's stagnation makes him no longer a part of the Canes long term plans. He's always been a guy that would need all 4 years at Minnesota, plus a couple in the AHL before he was anywhere near ready.

Mark Alt isn't a bad throw-in get for Philly. Has a lot of work to do, but has some really solid physical tools. Just needs more devel. time

Is including Alt maybe Carolina having to pay a premium for Philly taking Boucher? $950k cap hit doesn't seem like that much extra unless there is another move to be made.

Gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised so far. He's made two moves. None of them seem over-reactions to months of inactivity.

- Foster was a one-year contract.
- There's really no downside to this trade.

I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Great deal for the Flyers...

Trade an ECHLer for an okay AHL D-man and an NHL backup...

Luke Pither is a nobody

we basically got Boucher for nothing

I'm ok with this since it means Leighton won't be on the Flyers

Nah you basically got Alt for nothing. Boucher was always going to be waived here.

Alt wasn't signed, and even if they weren't going to, they still had another year holding his rights. They didn't really clear anything, unless Boucher is going on LTIR and wanted the Flyers to pay for it.

That, or it was Pither for Alt, and Rutherford just said "here, just take Boucher too, we don't want him."

Agreed, flyers fans shouldn't feel like we robbed CAR for Boucher, he was probably waiver bound anyway.

It isn't a rumor, its confirmed.

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1322177

Also, Boucher is reportedly going to be assigned to the AHL.

It seems Alt-Pither was the real trade.

Boucher's spot is the one being cleared, as Dan Ellis has played his way into that spot. Pither/Alt is essentially a minor league trade; neither is significant in terms of NHL roster.

It was pointed out on the Canes board that Charlotte is losing half a dozen players this weekend. Some of those spots will be filled by ECHL call ups, but it would be nice for them to have an AHL-quality replacement somewhere in there.

So... Alt/Pither cuts bait on a potential future AHL dman while bringing in an AHL center. Minor-league swap unless Alt's development curve changes dramatically. Boucher is sent to Philly because waiving him would be kind of a crummy move at this stage of his life. Rutherford kills two birds with one stone, and Holmgren was probably all too happy to upgrade his backup and acquire a prospect in exchange for a nobody AHL'er.

Still a weird trade, but sometimes these things just have to get done one way or another.
