I'm with you on this. Had he kept up his first year here, the whining about McDonagh wouldn't be anywhere near the level it's at now (deservedly so).

No he wouldn't.

They have to pay him regardless and still have to take the vast majority of his cap hit. The 900,000 just covers the AHL player who takes his place.

That rules is stupid. It sucks to prevent a guy from playing at lower level if he wants to. I heard Redden was great for the AHL guys.

Gomez is a good guy and I wish him the best.

Um, yes he would...$3 million doesn't warrant getting sent home like this, $7.35 million does.

Some team buy out Gomez by trading him and get McDonagh, some other team do it by sending it home. I guess we owe that to the Rangers for not picking Plekanec in the Kovalev deal.

Its a NHLPA decision most probably. Prevents players from losing their spots in a team if a player is injured and gets bought out.

Also prevents teams of getting rid of injured goods.
Same reason why you cant trade a injured player.

I dont see what's stupid about it.

I think he meant a $3M cap hit, in which case, I agree. He'd probably still be here. $3M is still overpaid (he's worth about $1.5M max, IMO), but it's not such a bad overpayment that it's not workable. We'd only have $2.1M on the cap even if they bought out Bourque, Kaberle, and sent Gomez to the minors. Obviously, its a moot point since his cap hit is actually more than double that though.

I started whining the second that the trade was made. Even in his first season he was underperforming and grossly overpaid.

NYR should have traded a pick with him just to get us to take his contract let alone sending McDonagh and Higgins away also.

Well keep in mind the cap is going down by almost 6 M next year, so either way Molson will be saving $ on his payroll.

The bottom line though is Molson will go from being scheduled to pay Gomez 4.5 M...to paying him 1.5 M in 2013-14 and 1.5 M in 2014-15.

In his first year as a Hab he scored 73 points in 97 games, FYI.

Higgins was crap when we traded him, the only real loss was McDonagh.

It should not apply to players not playing in the NHL.

Are you sure he doesn't get the entire amount. Didn't those reduced numbers only apply to the calculation of the cap hit and not the money the player received.

I don't even hear that much whining about McDonagh.

I more-so just hear how bad Gomez sucks. And he does.

Of course, I don't live in Montreal though.

Only because of the impending buyout and injury risk. Otherwise, as long as his cap hit is higher than the AHLer being recalled he would be released based on performance as there wouldn't be any other reason to do it.

With the impending buyout it would have been a huge distraction to the team so congrats to Bergevin for having the balls to make this move.

Did not expect that, waking up this morning.

How much money on the cap do they get back on the buyout for the last year of his contract?

As poor as Gomez played, it was never because of a lack of effort.

You made your own point with that last line. It's an endless dead horse, hopefully that's coming to an end now and they'll probably move onto their new scapegoats, Kaberle and Bourque.

No $$$ from his buyout goes onto the cap. If we buy out Kaberle OR Bourque (if one of them performs poorly) after this season, their $$$ will also not count towards the cap in any way.

This year, we save $900K on the cap by sending him down (assuming we do).
