[PHI/CAR] CAR sends Brian Boucher & Mark Alt to PHI for Luke Pither
By sending two relatively useless guys for one useless guy, Carolina frees up a contract spot for another player they can add or sign through trade.
But we don't, Alt's still an NCAA player, so it was a contract for contract swap. Probably was more a favor to Boosh to include him in this deal to send him somewhere he wants to play rather then waive him and possibly have him end up somewhere he has no intention of being at this point in his career.

Ahh I see. Alright. Good to know on the scheme of things.
Boucher's spot is the one being cleared, as Dan Ellis has played his way into that spot. Pither/Alt is essentially a minor league trade; neither is significant in terms of NHL roster.
It was pointed out on the Canes board that Charlotte is losing half a dozen players this weekend. Some of those spots will be filled by ECHL call ups, but it would be nice for them to have an AHL-quality replacement somewhere in there.
So... Alt/Pither cuts bait on a potential future AHL dman while bringing in an AHL center. Minor-league swap unless Alt's development curve changes dramatically. Boucher is sent to Philly because waiving him would be kind of a crummy move at this stage of his life. Rutherford kills two birds with one stone, and Holmgren was probably all too happy to upgrade his backup and acquire a prospect in exchange for a nobody AHL'er.
....and the potential for another transaction between PHilly and the Canes seems more likely with this trade. It is almost as if there's an unspoken "future considerations" thing here.
So after they amnesty buyout Bryz, Leighton/Boucher will be the dream team? The band is getting back together, just need to trade for Bobrovsky again now
I think Carolina makes a mistake here. Alt is a good prospect. He is a rock on defense every game for what may be the most talented team in college hockey. Last season they went to the Final too. Alt is a good get for Philly who needs d-men prospects.

He's had a few bad games, but he's still been better overall than Skjei and has pretty much knocked Holl out of a defense spot permanently. He's still holding his own on the blueline on one of the best teams in the nation. He is raw, there's no doubt about that, but that's one of the reasons I like him so much, he still has a lot of potential room for growth. At any rate, he's a better player than Pither one for one, even without Boucher.
Another trade I don't really understand from Carolina's point of view. I don't really understand why Alt was included. This one and the Westgarth trade kind of leave me shaking my head a little.

Holl is playing up because Lucia over-recruited defensemen for this year (or he expected one or two of them to jump early and they didn't) and Holl has the best forward skillset. Marshall and Reilly have also seen time up front.
Alt has been ok/fine defensively in regards to positioning, defensive zone coverage, etc... but when the puck is on his stick, it's a crapshoot. He's been a turnover machine.
im good with this move.
Pither freakin sucks. He was a junior kid that nobody else wanted and now we know why. Maybe Alt needs some work, and Boucher is what he is but this deal is a win for the Flyers. To get something for a Pither. win.
Another reason for this deal is the Flyers needed a option in case of injury, Monroe cant be called up and Heeter and Hovinen are nowhere near ready. I am fine with Boucher has the 3rd goalie. He is a classy dude who knows his role and wont complain.

I know, but Marshall and Reilly mostly play defense. You're right that Alt would not fly as a forward, but still, I think he's a better defenseman than Holl at this point.
Alt definitely has some improvements to make in his game if he wants to stick in the pros, but I like his enormous potential, even if he is unlikely to reach it. He was definitely better last season than this season.
I just feel if Carolina could have included somebody else other than Alt, they should have.
