[CAR/LAK] Kevin Westgarth for Anthony Stewart, 4th pick, 6th pick
Westgarth is married to Coach Bill Cower's daughter, Meagan. The Cowers live in Raliegh NC. Westgarth is graduate of Princeton Univ like his wife and sisterinlaw.
I'm sure one of the picks was to take Stewart's contract off their hands. He shouldn't be in the NHL. Kings fans raved about Westgarth a year ago.
Well, we raved that we had someone capable of skating after Ivanans But Westgarth doesn't really have any benefits other than heavyweight fighter. He isn't bad, but he literally cannot do anything other than fight and take penalties. His biggest asset is his lockeroom presence though. He is great with the media and the rest of the guys and is very sharp/smart.

Fair enough, but they STILL added two draft picks. Why?
As the old saying goes quantity =/= quality. Emphasizing TWO draft picks is pointless. The picks basically have no use other than locking up a possible 4th liners rights down the road. Really, losing those picks is no sweat off of JR's back.

Draft picks in the 4th and 6th rounds are not restricted to only getting 4th liners.

I was wondering what his connection to the area was.
He had been skating with a bunch of the locked out Carolina players off and on for the last month or so.

Whatever you say friend. Keep trying to rationalize it, but there is no other way of looking at it. It's a rip off. If your GM wanted to pay that much to get rid of Stewarts remaining one year, 900k salary that he could have just waived and buried in the AHL, fine by me, but there's no way the price paid for Westgarth is justified.

Of course they aren't, but they have more of a chance of not even reaching the NHL than they do of having any sort of impact on the team. Sure, they serve a purpose, but emphasizing the fact that JR gave up two draft picks is like emphasizing you have two pencils instead of one.
Aye. Both Alec Martinez and Dwight King, who were solid contributors in the playoffs for the Kings last year, were 4th round pics
Loktionov was a 5th rounder and Jordan Nolan a 7th. These picks may not turn out to be anything, but Westy rarely saw the ice after Sutter arrived. Good guy in the room from all accounts, however.
Wow. What an amazing deal. Rutherford must be drunk. I've been wanting Westy gone ever since I realized he was no better than Ivanans. Finally the Kings are enforcer-free!
someone mentioned earlier, but during the stretch run and through the playoffs, Westbarf acquitted himself quite well and battled just as hard as everyone else on the team as per their respective roles... he played the best hockey i've ever seen him play.
great guy... a bit of a piñata, but a real team dude. the 'Canes got some real character there.

You saying it is a ripoff is more ridiculous than me "rationalizing" it. You are acting like we traded a stud 2nd liner and two high picks for a 4th liner. Only one of those parts is right-the 4th liner. And that is what we needed. A 4th liner with size. Stewart wasn't that. Stewart didn't rack up points. Hell, Stewart hardly hit anything. Like I said earlier, the 4th rounder seems unnecessary, but it has 0 impact on this season and if this is a step in the larger framework of making Carolina a cup contender this year, this deal makes a whole lot of sense.
