I think he still can if he dumps his contract. But I doubt that happens. Gomer is at the end of his career. Wouldn't be surprised to see him keep the money and just retire.

I wonder if any other team will do the same.

It's a paper transaction. I am sure the Habs got Gomez to agree to NOT report today.

It's funny seeing how many people understand the move but feel Gomez is getting screwed, when, in the main NHL forum i was attacked and insulted over and over for having that opinion! I should have known to come here to discuss the Habs instead of there.

Great job everyone!

P.S.- I am a Blues fan #1 but have loved the Habs since I was a little kid. I even have a 1986 Claude Lemieux jersey still hanging in my closet! (Apparently it shrunk since it doesn't fit anymore! LOL)

Probably means he "ought to let it go"... you'd think that they couldn't quite fully stop a player under contract from reporting, but even if he does report he's not going to play, basically, so go ahead, Scott, report if you really want to fight it, but you're still just going to be in the pressbox even in Hamilton, so you might as well go sit home with your family. Sounds like Gomez understood all this and took it like a pro and will just go along with the organization, though.

Meanwhile, although the Habs ostensibly have enough cap room this year to still sign Subban, it could help to put Gomez's hit down to $900k in terms of performance bonuses to Galchenyuk (pending cushion issues) or to allow acquisition of other players if our season goes well enough to consider being buyers at the deadline.

Smartest move all around, for sure. Kudos, Bergevin!

1) Saves 900k on our cap
2) Grants us that 23rd roster spot in Montreal

It's just that on paper, he's in the AHL. But in reality, he's at home, getting those paychecks.

Good riddance to Gomez.
Every GM leaves a mark behind. It's impossible that there's zero positive. For example, under Houle we drafted and/or traded for Ribeiro, Markov, Beauchemin, Ryder, Souray, Hainsey.

On the plus side, I heard that Max Pac is only making something like 1.5 million this season. That's pretty good value.

As for Gomez, I hated the trade from day one but never expected him to be as bad as he was. I feel bad for the guy, but he's accountable for this. Nobody to blame but himself.

Makes sense in that if he played and got injured bad enough that he was still considered injured during the summer buyout period they habs could not buy him out.

If you send him to Hamilton, and it doesn't save you 7.3M in cap space, only 900K... what are the rangers doing with Redden?

Even one of the worst GM in the history of hockey in Houle made 2 nice trades. Thibault, Manson and Brown for mostly Hackett and Weinrich. That was pretty good. And even Malakhov for Souray was great. Gainey was obviously better.....but people using 1 trade to explain how great it ended up being....I can use 2 and act as if Houle was great as well....

There are some positives about Gainey. But I think that the worst is a hockey philosophy to which I will never understand. The guy won with the perfect mix in his team. His Habs were incredibly talented but has some grit and toughness to which he refused to adhere and then when he did make the worst choices possible.

For the ones who feel bad for Gomez, think of it this way. Your boss just called you to tell you you suck at your job so dont bother showing up on monday, dont even bother calling service canada for unemployment checks, will still pay you to stay at home.... Ego down, money intact... Now add a couple zeros to what you're getting weekly and yeah, doesnt feel so bad does it...?

#Habs say Gomez will be put on waivers, and once he clears he will not take a roster spot
