I wonder what Carolina sees in him that makes him valued that much? Either that or Carolina figures they won't win the Cup this year, might as well become the Broad Street Bullies and beat up the other teams.

That is absolutely insane.

I think, Sutter is going to be a great coach for Stewert. Everyone talks about what a great personality the kid has, but he can lose focus at times. Sounds like a good 4th line project for Sutter.

Such an odd trade. Stewart is meh, mostly because of inconsistency. That stuff don't fly with Sutter, and I would have done it straight up just to see if coach could turn him around. I'm perplexed at the two extra picks, unless Carolina desperately needed to unload a 900K contract for something.

Stewart is good in the room, at least, but likely he'll just be waived. Wait.... isn't that what I said about Frasier last year?

Thank ****ing god Westy is gone. Sorry but he was really not any good and to get this type of return?! Yes please. I wanted Stewart when he was a FA. At worst, he'll be a good AHLer to help with the massive amount of youth in Manchester and relieve them losing both King and Nolan to us. At best, he'll be a good 4th liner in case someone goes down. I'm really shocked we got a 4th out of it and that we didn't have to send a pick back.

Westgarth made quite a bit of cash to sit in the stands. Stewart provides the ability to chip in, play rough and has one year less on his contract. Just two years ago Stewart had 40 points in 80 games playing between the 3rd and 4th lines. That year he had 12 points in 13 playoff games.

A 4th round pick for Westy? Nice ****ing job Deano! The other pick and Stewart are nice too.

Great trade. He will fit in well on the fourth line. The picks are a great bonus.

You have to seriously question the sanity of someone who trades all that for Westy

Stewart, 28, has played in 262 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers and Florida Panthers. He has recorded 71 points (7-44=71) and 123 penalty minutes.

A 6-3, 230-pound native of La Salle, Quebec, Stewart last year played in 77 games for Carolina and he recorded 11 points (6-5=11). The previous season he recorded a career-high 14 goals with the Thrashers.

He was originally selected by the Panthers in the first-round (25th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

I honestly doubt he'll be on the 4th line. We already had too many forwards.

When Kopi is back, we roll:

Brown-Kopi-Williams
Gagne-Richards-Carter
Penner-Stoll-Lewis
King-Fras-Nolan
Richie/Clifford/Stewart

Richie is versatile and can play pretty much any forward position. Clifford, for some reason, is loved by DL. Seems to me like Stewart could be destined for Manchester.

Well after this whole CBA debacle glad to see a small market team use picks to shed salary. I think Stewart makes $1M even if he plays in the AHL.

In the AHL... I doubt we'll see him on the NHL roster except in a serious emergency.

Carolina was sorely in need of a bit of muscle. I guess Lombardi fleeced JR for a couple extra draft picks in the process.

Westgarth is married to Bill Cowhers daughter, who lives in the area. He had been practicing with many of the locked out Hurricanes for the last month or so.

A Stew is a great guy and a pretty funny Tweeter, but ranges from non-existent on the ice to downright bad. I wouldn't expect much out of him, but you guys definitely got a few free draft picks in the process.

Also, you guys might want to warn Quick and Bernier about Stewarts goalie leg humping celebration after victories.

Little known fact. Kings wanted to draft Anthony Stewart in 2003, and were miffed when Florida moved up and selected Stewart. Which is why the Kings called a time out at the draft. They were unprepared and had no clue how to react to having the player they were about to select get plucked away from them. So they mulled it over and took a gamble with Brian Boyle.

Agreed with WWAD on why Carolina wanted Westgarth, we sorely need the physicality. As for Stewart, don't expect much out of him other than a big body with some energy. He's extremely inconsistent offensively, and has pretty bad hands.

What can you tell us about Westgarth? Is he a decent 4th line hockey player, or is he just essentially a goon? And if he is just a goon, is he at least decent at fighting?

He's just a goon, and bad one at that. Their were probably 3 or 4 guys on last years team we would have rather seen drop the gloves. Certainly King and Nolan.

Just a goon. Not really good at anything else, honestly. He's a decent fighter, though.

Yeah. He is an enforcer who can't enforce jack ****. The Kings are filled with guys who aren't enforcers but are more than willing to fight, making a guy who is paid to fight, and sucks at it, expendable.

I don't think Deano's done. He still needs a D-man to replace Mitchell while Mitchell is out.

I don't know about gritty, but he does seem like a good guy in the locker room.

Good return for a bad enforcer that wouldn't crack our lineup. Stewart is an upgrade (even if he doesn't play) and LA gets 2 picks? Great job, Dean.

Westy was a great teammate though and part of me wishes the trade happened after the opening night ceremony (unrealistic idea I know). Best of luck to him in Carolina.
