So we have 2 Center positions. In a normal season, each can be played 82 times because their are 82 games. So you have a total of 164 games played in those 2 center slots. That means you might not want to play your 4th center off the bench because that's one less game your 1st overall pick center can play. The bench in Roto is for depth, not playing every chance you get.

Currently our league is set to 40 games, which means even if you just play your top 2 centers, you'll run out of games early. It should be 48 so if you leave the same player in at the same position all year and he plays every game, you play the exact right number of games.

Now take this for every position. We have 2 Centers, 2 LW, 2 RW, 2 F, 4 D and 2 G. I'm just going to assume we get it switched to 48 max games for this. That means you can play each position this many times. If it stays at 40, they are all 80 and 160 for D.

C: 96
LW: 96
RW: 96
F: 96
D: 192 (because we have 4 of them, each 48 games)
G: 96

The F spot can be filled by any C, LW or RW though. So if you play a guy at C one day and at F the next day, they each only go down by 1. The same goes for players who are listed as more than one position.

Now for goalies, keep in mind that they will not play every game in real life. So you may want to have a 3rd goalie that you play. Though at the same time, goalies have 2 stats that are % based, so only half of their stats actually require a lot of games to add up. Oh, and Yahoo does not count goalie games if they never actually play. So if you know the backup is playing, you don't have to sit your goalie. But if the backup gets pulled and your goalie goes in even for 1 second, it counts as a game played for the goalie.

TLDR: Basically, the point is simply this. Don't play your worst skaters unless its to replace games that your better skaters miss. For every game Dustin Jeffrey plays at center, that's one less game Sidney Crosby can play at center. But every time Crosby misses a game, you want to play someone else a game to make it up. So if you just play guys every time they play, you'll get off to an awesome lead and then run out of games and watch everyone catch up because their best players are playing all of their games.

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed response/explanation Ogre!!

That helps a great deal. I am sure I will learn as I go, but now I have much better understanding of it. Big thanks!

no problem. I commish a league with my friends and the first year 3 or 4 of the 11 team league ran out of games with a month or two left. Then they obviously lost interest and 2 of them didn't come back the next year.

ps: if you have 1 game left, Yahoo! will count any player that plays that position. So you can sneak an extra start out of each forward spot and 3 extra d spots by going into the last day with 1 game left in each position and playing as many as you have playing. It decided my league the first year. We realized its easier to just explain it to everyone beforehand than to try to tell people not to do it.

Wow, when I say "trust the Ogre" I wasn't lying.

I totally forgot about that aspect of Roto (# of games in a slot). So basically, don't ever take your best players at a position out unless they're hurt because each roster slot only allows so many games and if the guy's not hurt, sooner or later he'll make up for slow weeks with 1 game, etc?

heh thanks. I am addicted to fantasy hockey. its bad

unless you would rather play matchups. so maybe sit your better guy vs the kings to play a worse guy vs the oilers or something.

and ya, if it doesn't get switched from 40 to 48, it'll be really interesting to decide who you sit when.

I'm sure Yahoo will fix the 40/48 issue.

I really hate using SOG, but in a rotisserie league it's almost a necessity.

At least the rotisserie decision looks better in the wake of the lockout. Such a short H2H schedule would involve half of the league being out of things by the midway point.

you can manually change it just to be safe.

I use Bocked Shots instead of SOG in mine. I like it a lot more because it adds a lot of value to d-men and doesn't just make the guys who are already good at fantasy stats even better. Not a big deal. Stats are stats.

I don't like arena-specific stats like hits, blocks, whatever. Too much variance from one arena scorekeeper to another for it to be 'fair'. A shot is a shot. That's the only reason I went with that.

If Yahoo doesn't fix that game counter by mid-week I'll do it manually.

it seriously would have taken less time to change it than it took to type that sentence

and I don't get why people are so big on that scorekeeper stuff. As long as its consistent from year to year I don't think it matters.

it won't show me your username, just your nickname. It also won't show me your email, but it let me send you an email. Maybe that will be enough to recover your name? Unless it just sends it to the email is attached to that Yahoo account

Yah that was a good draft. I got a little tunnel-visioned on one stat throughout (thought I was in better shape than I was relative to others), but that's OK. Should be a pretty competitive league. And pretty much fire and forget... just check for injuries and watch your stats a little to be sure no one is tanking. Will be tough to figure with such a short season though. Hard to see trends in a situation like this (early on anyway).

Good luck, hosers!

Is there enough people to start a second one? I don't know how to set it up, or run it, but I'd be interested in joining. I just got an email for the league I joined, which was going to have the draft in 45 mins, saying it was canceled because only 8 of the 10 slots were filled

I was so pumped to finally try fantasy sports too D:

He already deleted the league

I'll just join another. Is today, or the 15th the last day to start for this weeks scoring to count? I swear I saw something on yahoo saying something like that.
