Thanks
Is Edler at 100% or is it one of those injuries that may never be 100% but he can play through?
He said something like that nothing says that he will not be able to playtime at 100% even if he might have some lasting symptoms (the last part was actually something about not being 100% recovered even if he might play hockey at 100%).
There's lots of risk. Risk of him taking a roster spot off someone else, risk of potentially costing us games etc
Who's roster spot do you think he could take? It won't be anyone in our top 7.
Are we really worried about the potential ramifications of Derek Joslin being passed on the depth chart here and losing minutes? Barker and Joslin are the same age.
Doesn't he just replace a guy like Miskovic in Chicago?
The Canucks don't have enough quality defense prospects playing at the AHL level to worry about this signing IMO. Connauton is arguably our top prospect in the AHL and his future looks anything but bright. As long as Peter Andersson doesn't lose his spot, it's not a big deal IMO.
Who knows what Arniel will do with him if he is sent down. He has given leniency and preference to players with vet experience over prospects this season.
I still believe Polasek has some upside and was just called up. I don't feel he should lose his spot to Barker either. And this is not even touching the fact that he is not a good player at the AHL level. Why do you want that on our AHL team that is struggling to make the playoffs as it is?
As a camp invite, i was willing to brush it off. It's whatever. It is what it is, but as a signing, I'd prefer almost anyone else worth mentioning left in free agency.
Marco Sturm disagrees. Gillis likes to gamble. It is evident. He'll play the outside, and play it well. But every once in a while, out of the blue, he'll put a bunch of chips on 00. It is perplexing, but one of these days hes bound to win, right? Right?
Seriously so many drama queens...this is a no risk signing and will have little effect on the teams ability to win or lose...7th d-men don't win championships.
What the hell is Mike Gillis doing? Unlike the last CBA he can't take a flyer on whatever retread that comes along and bury them in the minors. Unless Barker has a two way contract this is a stupid mistake. Scratch that, this is a dumb move either way.

All of that luck went into Higgins and Lapierre. None is left.
Throw in the fact that we are a cup-contending team with a volatile media/fanbase and it could get ugly for barker pretty fast.
Don't really see the issue here. He's not going to be relied upon to contribute in any meaningful way on this team. Realistically, he's behind:
Edler-Garrison
Hamhuis-Bieksa
Ballard-Tanev
Alberts
Connaughton
Sauve
Ohlund (brought back with a time machine)
Luongo (Fabio)
Ohlund (controlling a robot version of himself with an xbox controller from a hospital bed)
It's not like we're super committed to Barker. This is about as nothing of a signing as you can get.

Two-way or one-way contract doesn't matter one bit, unless if you're really concerned over Aquillini's pocket book.
And unless I've misunderstood the new CBA, you absolutely can hide this contract in the minors. You are only charged for every dollar you spend over 900k, per contract. So at 700k this should be safe to hide in the minors.

If you want to make the playoffs, don't you want Cam Barker in Chicago? Barker is a far better dman than Polasek at this point...
People are being harder on Barker than guys like Joslin because of where he was drafted. Of course he's pitiful in relation to what he was supposed to be. Doesn't mean he's pitiful compared to a guy like Derek Joslin. Joslin probably has zero NHL upside, yet we didn't see this type of reaction when he was signed.
