Funny thing is that he was the best player outside of Dubi for those 5 games. Feels like an eternity ago given how the org has come along. Gilroy was doing something consistently in HFD that he hardly ever did in NY, and that is block shots.

Still doesn't engage or compete hard enough physically, but a very solid signing.

Eminger outplayed him in the second half of the 10-11 season and Gilroy still got playing time over him.

Little more competition for the 6th spot. Doubt he gets it. The Rangers don't need another offensive dman. I bet he will end up in the AHL before the end of January.

Like the signing a lot. Glory can be a serviceable bottom pairing dman when needed. Outside of Bickel and Eminger, one of which will be playing everyday, the Rangers lacked anyone else who could even play 10 minutes in a NHL game. Gilroy can. Good depth signing and the contract is great

If we are seeing Gilroy on a nightly (or even semi-nightly) basis I am worried.

But for $650k you can't really go wrong.

Didn't Gilroy see a lot of time in the playoffs with the Senators? How bad can he be?

For 10 minutes a night he's a better option than Bickel. There's no shortage of toughness on the blueline, Gilroy brings more puckmoving ability out of the back end.

Still would like to see what he can do as a forward, though.

Gilroy has been a trainwreck in his own end in CT and that is putting it nicely. He definitely can add some offense from the blueline which may be useful depending on the opponent.

I'd guess that between them, Gilroy will be the first one to line up as a forward.

Gilroy's even strength production last season was actually higher than any other current Ranger defenseman at 1.06 ESP/60.

His PP ice-time was (IMO) rightly cut dramatically, though. His skills don't translate to the PP.

Gilroy actually looked good in TB at the beginning of the season last year. Due to injuries he was sometimes playing top4. He is what he is. He is a great skater who can play 10-12 minutes a game consistently if need be. If people think Gilroy is bad they should look at who the Rangers had before signing him ready for the NHL.

Depth is key

biggest issue with gilroy in the lineup imo is the fact that the open spot is next to MDZ another offensive dman. a spot better suited for a stay at home guy (sauer )

gilroy would probably have a better chance of success if he was paired with a defensive stud like staal but i think staal will stay with stralman unless someone gets hurt.

Gilroy is what he is, but with Sauer out we are kind of thin on RD. We could have done worse.

I'd rather have Stu Bickel in the lineup over Gilroy, AINEC.
