LeBrun just tweeted that you guys had 6000 people show up to practice today. That is absolutely fantastic for your market.

Going to be an exciting season for you guys. Rooting for you.

Videos from Training Camp 01/13/2013

I took some video from training camp today in case anyone is interested. I'll upload some more later; my other videos are on another phone.

White v Red 5 on 5 (I think)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHb-YUL4w9Y

Red v Blue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY-6a3AlZxU

Yellow v Blue
http://youtu.be/GZqwliieyOw

Blue v White
http://youtu.be/QXDdIGOaxsw

I believe the Blue line was Perron Backes Oshie
White: Mcdonald Steen Tarasenko

Could have been wrong... especially about Steen... wasn't sure if that was him or not.

At the end of camps there are going to be a high number of players put on waivers including some players with decent talent. The risk of sending some one down at the end of camp is a lot less than sending some one down later in the season. Re-entry waivers are gone so the player only gets put on waivers to be sent down. The Blues may only have 2 extra players in camp some teams have a lot more players that have to be sent down. The Risk of losing either reaves or porter is really low.

I think Porter is the odd man out as well. Nothing against him, but I'd rather have Reaves the heavywieght, and Langs of course if JS makes the roster. I'd doubt anyone would claim Porter but even if, it wouldn't be much of a loss anyway.

Our F depth is crazy. Can't wait for Saturday!

I didn't realize re-entry waivers are gone. Good riddance.

I know that the rule where European signings having to pass through waivers (like bit the Blues twice 2 seasons ago) is gone. I think that was St Louis' contribution to the new CBA.

If Schwartz gets a spot in camp, I don't think that's good news for Porter.

The question is, do the Blues keep Schwartz if it means risking losing either Porter or Reaves via waivers?

I also wouldn't be surprised if one of those 15 guys gets injured this week meaning the Blues can simply put the injured player on IR thus saving them from having to make that decision for now.

Then again, Hitch may have completely different lines tomorrow. Who knows!
I'm less concerned about Porter/Reaves and waivers, at least at the end of camp. And I also think that an injury could easily make this moot (I posted the same notion earlier. Great minds think alike.)

If you deconstruct the offensive pairs that Hitchcock wants to keep intact, I find:
X - Backes - Oshie
X - Berglund - Stewart

and I'm guessing, but:
X - Steen - Tarasenko (I'm guessing this develops into an indivisible duo in Hitch's mind.)

Interesting that D'Agostini is left wing on the 4th line. I think this may be his spot entering the first game. And if the 4th line doesn't execute their role well, he could find himself scratched again (like during the playoffs) in favor of a guy like Porter or Reaves.

Can't we just roll these 5 lines and call it good? I like them all.

Sorry, I'm just excited. But here's my lines out of camp based on what we now know:

Perron - Backes - Oshie
McDonald - Steen - Tarasenko
Schwartz - Berglund - Stewart
D'Agostini - Sobotka - Langenbrunner

Reaves/Nichol (Porter to AHL.)

Defense:
Russell - Pietrangelo
Jackman - Shattenkirk
Cole - Polak

Woywitka

That 4th line is stronger than many team's 3rd lines. Wow, that looks really dangerous.

No doubt. Any thoughts on Russell being paired with Petro? I think I like it. And Cole and Polak is a deadly strong pairing. They will punish people.

I wonder how many teams Cole and Polak would be bottom pairings on?

I think Russell as Pietro's partner is OK. Compare him with Colaiacovo, and I don't think there's a drop-off really. You get better puck movement, more hockey sense and a smaller frame. He'll get outmuscled at times, but if the offensive line is playing their defensive checking like Hitchcock requires, the puck should be moving to the offensive zone quickly anyway.

The only defensive pairing I am leary of is Jackman-Polak. Ironic, since this was an incredibly effective shutdown pairing in the past. Problem is that you have too little ability to get the puck out of the zone quickly with those two. And that quick transition is the gruel that Hitchcock's engine runs on.

Alex Pietrangelo

Hey Blues fans,

Im just curious about Pietrangelo after he had surgery in the offseason. I'm in a fantasy pool and what to make him one of my picks and I'm just curious if he will be ready to go for opening night.

Thanks!

Got quite a few pics and short videos (I'll compile them) that I'll have up over the next few days. The Q & A was pretty fun as well.

He was expected to be ready for camp back in September after the minor surgery. I'm sure he's fully recovered by now.

Ya know, I love Backes, but I can't wait until we have a #1 defenceman be captain again (and no, I'm not talking about Brewer).

I'm expecting a big season as well. Unless McDonald plays close to the full 48 games, I expect Pietrangelo to lead the team in points (high 30's).

Are you really going to make him babysit Russel all season? That will hurt him if he has to be all that much more defensively minded due to playing with Russel.

I personally want his partner to be Cole, but realistically, there's no way Russell screws up more than Poliocovo.

Merged the Pietrangelo thread, as there's already a similar discussion taking place here.

Perhaps, but Russel is pretty bad... Just doesn't make sense to me as an outsider.

He's a small frame, but his skating, hockey sense, and puck moving ability is miles ahead of Colaiacovo and that pairing did just fine last year. Russell's not nearly as bad as you make him out to be. He's just a little small
