However, neither Elias nor Brodeur feel the news Sunday will be the last we hear from Gomez. Both guys feel his career can be resurrected if Gomez were to find a team that provided him the proper structure to allow his game to flourish.
Brodeur didn't rule out that team being the Devils.
"Stranger things have happened," he said. "A lot of guys have come back.
"He's an unbelievable talent and he has great hockey sense, but he got successful right from the get go -- and rightfully so -- on a good team with good teammates, and the main thing is he was always under great structure," forward Patrik Elias told NHL.com. "That's the biggest thing with him. Maybe when he left here his mind wasn't focused 100 percent on hockey. When you go to the Rangers and Montreal you have to do a lot of stuff off the ice, too, and some guys can't handle that."
He'd get a tryout at this point.
Below replacement-level player, or poor-man's Mathieu Darche.
Actually that is not true. His boxcars suck. He is massively overpaid (and was from day 1 of the contract with the Rangers). And the trade for him did ruin July 1st for me and my family while we vacationed at a resort in Northern Ontario. BUT he did drive possession. Gomez at 1.5 to 3 million would be on Bell Center ice right now.
It wouldn't shock me if somebody offered him $1-2M. Still just 1 year, though. I'm thinking Gomez won't just follow the best $$$ this time, though. So if NJ or somewhere that he really feels personally comfortable going has any kind of offer at all, that ought to be more interesting to him than the highest $.
I think he ought to get a 1-way deal straight off, even if it's $550k or whatever the league min is for next season, not merely a camp invite.
But it also depends to some extent on his state of mind and how he keeps himself during this period of inactivity. If he wants it and prepares for it, he will get another chance.
1 year at one 1 million. If he doesn't get an NHL contract offer I would LOVE to have him on Hamilton. Numerous Habs players have talked about him being fantastic in the dressing room and I think he'd be a great mentor for the prospects.
I think someone will give him $1.5 for 1 year. Everyone forgets how Souray was a bum and demoted to the AHL because of his contract. Played for 1 season at $1.65 mill and now...at the age of 36 is on a 3 year deal worth $3.66 per year. Gomez, if he wants it, will get another shot...or 2...or 3
He may get $1M or less on a 1 year deal but that would be max. All you saying $2M or more are crazy and haven't see him play. The game passed him by a few years ago. I hope he's been sending Slats Xmas cards because that man gave him one of the most grossly overpaid contracts in the history of the NHL.
