Could be a decent AHL depth signing. Considering he was ONCE a great NHLer, I bet he could be a decent mentor for some up-and-coming players in a team's farm system.

I still have a hard time believing a former 1st round pick, calder winner, consistent 60-80 point producer suddenly forgot how to play the game at 32.

Montreal?, marrage problems?, depression?

He even started playing for Alaska this year so he clearly still wants to play the game.

However, neither Elias nor Brodeur feel the news Sunday will be the last we hear from Gomez. Both guys feel his career can be resurrected if Gomez were to find a team that provided him the proper structure to allow his game to flourish.

Brodeur didn't rule out that team being the Devils.

"Stranger things have happened," he said. "A lot of guys have come back.

"He's an unbelievable talent and he has great hockey sense, but he got successful right from the get go -- and rightfully so -- on a good team with good teammates, and the main thing is he was always under great structure," forward Patrik Elias told NHL.com. "That's the biggest thing with him. Maybe when he left here his mind wasn't focused 100 percent on hockey. When you go to the Rangers and Montreal you have to do a lot of stuff off the ice, too, and some guys can't handle that."

$900,000 to be the 13th forward on a contender.

Ya, and might climb as high as 1.5 million due to a few teams believing they have the solution that will help him come back to his former self. Canucks are known for doing that.

I can see a team in need of a #2 centre giving him a 1 year deal at between 2 and 3 million per.

I would sign him for no more than 1 year and 1 million. If he rediscovers his game, then we talk more money.

Probably $1.5m to a team near the bottom who needs more options up front.

If we don't upgrade at center dramatically in the next 8 months, I can see the Yotes brining him in on a 1 year deal with incentives. I'd be all for that.

He'd get a tryout at this point.
Below replacement-level player, or poor-man's Mathieu Darche.

Teams will be lining up to sign him as a #1C as soon as he hits FA

At least ECHL teams will be

Actually that is not true. His boxcars suck. He is massively overpaid (and was from day 1 of the contract with the Rangers). And the trade for him did ruin July 1st for me and my family while we vacationed at a resort in Northern Ontario. BUT he did drive possession. Gomez at 1.5 to 3 million would be on Bell Center ice right now.

With his buy out, I dont think money is an issue for gomez
He would probably get 1m somewhere because he still has value as a depth forward.

It wouldn't shock me if somebody offered him $1-2M. Still just 1 year, though. I'm thinking Gomez won't just follow the best $$$ this time, though. So if NJ or somewhere that he really feels personally comfortable going has any kind of offer at all, that ought to be more interesting to him than the highest $.

I think he ought to get a 1-way deal straight off, even if it's $550k or whatever the league min is for next season, not merely a camp invite.

But it also depends to some extent on his state of mind and how he keeps himself during this period of inactivity. If he wants it and prepares for it, he will get another chance.

1 year at one 1 million. If he doesn't get an NHL contract offer I would LOVE to have him on Hamilton. Numerous Habs players have talked about him being fantastic in the dressing room and I think he'd be a great mentor for the prospects.

He's horrible- why would anyone pay for him when there are FAs who bring more to the table? Jason Arnott can do a lot more for a team than Gomez and Arnott can't even get a phone call.

I think someone will give him $1.5 for 1 year. Everyone forgets how Souray was a bum and demoted to the AHL because of his contract. Played for 1 season at $1.65 mill and now...at the age of 36 is on a 3 year deal worth $3.66 per year. Gomez, if he wants it, will get another shot...or 2...or 3

At a contract below 3M, I'm sure he'll find work somewhere. He has a hard time scoring goals, but given the right role, I can easily see him posting 40+ points seasons.

He may get $1M or less on a 1 year deal but that would be max. All you saying $2M or more are crazy and haven't see him play. The game passed him by a few years ago. I hope he's been sending Slats Xmas cards because that man gave him one of the most grossly overpaid contracts in the history of the NHL.
