Wouldn't expect the hold out to last very long if the Stars are indeed offering multiple years and big money. Benn has already set the parameters of the negotiation in that case.
Meh, half the season was already wasted, I could give a **** less if Benn misses a few more games or the rest of the season for that matter. However, it is funny to watch all of these Benn trade threads pop up made by other team's fans, yet they're blaming us for the Benn hype, lol.
"Optimistic" doesn't sound optimistic to me considering it implies there's a chance he won't be back on the team.
Don't fret, there's always that chance, but I think they've made it pretty clear who they want to build around. I read into it as Joe giving a generic statement on a slow negotiations process.
8 years 45 million (AAV 5.625M)... I dare you Joe, just do it.
Yeah, would definitely be nice if they could lock him up by Friday at the latest, but it's not the end of the world if this goes another week. He'll sign eventually.

Considering Dallas has 3 new players that will be filling the top 2 lines and will be playing heavy minutes, don't you think this will mess up the chemistry of the team? If Benn misses training camp, I think he will have a harder time easing himself into the lineup once the season starts. They will be play 7 games in 11 days to start the season and this will brutal.
I think they have to get him signed today or tomorrow.
The team is doing itself more harm than good with this. If a long term deal is so difficult, just overpay him on a two year deal to get him in camp. It's not like cap room will be a problem in two seasons. It's not even a big deal budget wise because the team will only pay him for 75% of whatever they give him due to the lost start of this season.
That also allows them to find out if he is the superstar they sell him as. If he is, they can give him the contract he wants now. If he's not, they can deal with it next summer.
I don't remember where I read this but about a week ago one of the "insiders" out there seemed to believe that Benn's camp wanted a shorter term deal than the Stars wanted.

If he wants a deal that takes him right to UFA, then I don't blame Joe for playing hardball. Bridge contract that leaves him a RFA for another negotiation, or max out at 8 years. No middle ground.

hockey's one of those sports where a guy can come in and just start playing. sure, chemistry may be a bit of an issue to start, but the learning curve to adjust to teammate tendencies should be relatively short. coaches change lines abruptly all the time. and for the most part, midseason trades don't result in massive confusion with the new player and the new team.
that said, i'll play the prediction game and say benn is signed friday.
