Phaneuf... ehhh. I don't like him. He is without question one of the dumbest people I've ever seen speak on television, and it shows in his game. Littered with bad reads, brainfarts. The guy is just a meathead.

But, he is nasty and has some offence in his game. But not worth his cap hit. But to be fair, neither is Stastny. In a vacuum, I'd say that Stastny is worth more. I surely wouldn't trade him for Phaneuf.
What the hell does this mean anyways?

All variables removed from the equation. Usually regarding contract, team needs, etc etc.

Things in a vacuum are very popular in science, which is where the word is termed, which is why you dont understand it.

Just a tip for future reference, it is an allegorical phrase regarding the vacuum of space, not a vacuum cleaner (ie hoover).

Right. Well, you don't understand hockey...let's call it even.

As a Leaf fan, I can support that statement.

Intelligence and a high Hockey IQ (IMO) are absolutely necessary to being a true elite #1 D. There are a few "elite" D who aren't the best skaters, aren't the best shooters, etc. But they all have great hockey IQ, great positioning, etc.

That's pretty much the difference between Weber and Phaneuf. Both are physical, both have good shots, but Weber has intelligence and is able to read plays MUCH better.

In saying that, Phaneuf is still a valuable piece and can play on a top pair. But he's also not a franchise guy. Too many flaws to his game.

Toronto gets their centre for the top line and promotes JVR to top line.

Col top 6 -Duchene, Landeskog, Lupul, OReilly, Hejduk, Jones

TOR top 6- Kessel, Stastny, JVR, Grabovski, Kulemin, MacArthur

Been brought up in the thread COL would prefer a D

Phaneuf (6.5M x2)

for

Stastny (6.6M x2)

I would make either of these deals. Lupul and Connolly ecspecially. If Kulemin can rebound back to solid production a guy like Lupul can be expendable, and coming off a great season his value is higher than ever. I would be hesitant to trade Dion straight up. But if COL needs D i would propose something like this:

Lupul
Franson/Holzner
2nd

for

Statsny
Jones

Couldnt agree more. The IQ may come with time as Phanuef is still relativley young in the grand scheme of things. But having Dion as our #1 and captain doesnt make sense to me. His judgment is questionable most of the time on the ice. I would not be against trading him if it brings in a bonified #1 C.

Avs will sign Lupul as a UFA this summer and he'll be a 100 point player on O'Reilly's wing.

There's a pretty big difference between lupul and phanuef. Without kessel I doubt lupul has another year liike that. I'm saying that while lupul being one of my favorite players.

I'm sure it's been said, but if the Avs are trading one of their top 3 centers I would imagine the main piece they'd want back would be a defenseman.

Sam Gagner is 23, and with 5 seasons put's on a 50 point pace pretty much every year. Yet he is concidered a total bust and garbage here.

This board is horrible with tons of teens and new fans that know nothing.

In the NHL, Phaneuf is relatively middle aged. If he hasn't figured out how to read the play by now after 7 years in the league, chances are his future improvements will only be marginal.

Ya after 7 years you would think so. But defense is a mature position, much like goaltending, with the majority of players seeing thier prime around the 27-28-29 yr old mark. So we will see if Dion can step his game up at all as he enters these years. But i do agree, improvements (if any) will be marginal.
