Joe Finley (D) claimed off waivers by Isles from Buff.
Finley, 25, is a former 1st round pick of Washington in 2005. Last year, his first in the NHL, he had 0 points in 5 games along with 12 PIM. Finley is a monstrous 6'8", 245 lbs.
He was a bust as a first rounder, but Buffalo thought enough of his AHL play last year to sign him to a multi-year deal. Might be decent as a #7, spot #6 against more physical teams.
i cant wait to see Carkner and Finley on the Islanders blueline against Nash and Gaborik on the ice they will skate circles around those two players that cant skate and just fight...
I am a fan of Big Joe Finley and I will definitely miss seeing him on the ice in an Amerks jersey. He isn't the most skilled guy, but when he is on his game he is a physical presence and a quiet shut down defensmen. Don't look to him for offense and I am not sure he'll be able to keep up at the NHL pace.
Talk about a big body, this guy deserves to be in the NHL..
Deserves because he is big? Weird logic, no offense.
Finley is going to be a career AHL'er, but on a team desperate for blueliners he could stick as a 7th. Not the place you want to be orgainzationally, however.
I like him though. It's fun to watch him in the minors.
One or two defenseman will be brought up from Bridgeport so we are going to need bodies to replace them. I don't expect Finley to be anywhere near Long Island unless the plauge hits their blueline.

But, I just realized Finley has to play with the Isles and has to clear waivers again to go down to Bridgeport. Looks like Snow really wants to add some size on the blueline...in the form of Seth Jones.
They claimed this guy over someone like Hickey?? Well, maybe he does have something to offer but at least he has size, which the Islanders need.
No, Hickey is on waivers today, so we wont find out if hes claimed till tomarrow. Finley was on waivers yesturday. The Islanders are 4th on the claim order behind Columbus, Edmonton and Montreal.

Well now that they claimed Finley I can't see them wanting to claim Hickey now, unless they really want him and want to keep Donovan/Ness in the AHL all season.

Doesn't he have to be on the NHL roster rather than the AHL roster as a waiver claim.

Seems like management is okay with rebuilding for at least one more year (which I think is a good idea) so giving Donovan/Ness a little extra dev time would make sense.
I think Hickey could do well on the Island.

Well, they didn't even call them up for camp so I would assume the team wants them to stay in Bridgeport for the year.
Considering the Isles d right now is Streit, Hamonic, MacDonald, Carkener, Martinek, ????, and I don't see Finley as more than the #7, they could still grab Hickey if they like him.
