Looking to break the ice
“You’re going to see pretty much what you’ve seen before,’’ noted general manager Peter Chiarelli, who greeted the media in a morning news conference. “You’re going to see a good team.’’

How good, of course, depends on such factors as:

Familiar faces at Bruins’ practice
There were few surprises as the Bruins hit the TD Garden ice Sunday for their first official post-lockout practice. Three of the four lines have played together before. Two of the three defense pairings were the same from previous seasons.

The only major difference from last season is in goal, where Tuukka Rask will replace Tim Thomas as the No. 1 puck-stopper.

Thomas to be banned in ‘non-adversarial way’
We want to do it in a non-adversarial way,” Chiarelli said of suspending Thomas. “I’ve talked to the agent. We’ll agree to some type of set of facts. That will be it.”

Last summer, Chiarelli projected that a team below the cap floor might trade for Thomas. Even though Thomas wouldn’t play, a team could have used his cap hit to reach the floor.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, the floor this season is $44 million. All teams are above that threshold.

Bruins thrilled to start 48-game sprint
The Bruins have concluded their first official post-lockout practice. In less than a week, they’ll be back on TD Garden ice to kick off the season against the New York Rangers.

“It’s the best day of 2013 so far,” Milan Lucic said. “I remember last week when the news came that we were going to start with a smile on my face. It’s been there pretty much for the whole week and going on into today.”

High praise for rookie Hamilton .
When Peter Chiarelli was asked about rookie defenseman Dougie Hamilton yesterday, the Bruins general manager went the same prudent route he’s usually taken over the last year by doing his best to temper the expectations for the 19-year-old.

Sprint, not marathon .
“The level of tolerance, the level of patience, for the coaching staff and for myself, is different now,” Chiarelli said. “It’s different this year. That’s what you have to keep in mind, whether it relates to changing up the lines, or me reacting to a mini-slump. This is a friggin’ sprint, a full sprint. The frequency of things is going to be at a higher pitch.”

Adam McQuaid cleared to play opener .
If there was any real surprise at the Bruins’ first day of training camp, it was a happy one.

Yesterday morning general manager Peter Chiarelli declared that defenseman Adam McQuaid had passed his physical and is expected to be in the lineup Saturday in the season opener against the Rangers.

“Unless,” Chiarelli said jokingly, “he stinks out there.”

Warsofsky thrilled by training camp invitation
“This camp is a lot different than other training camps, where everyone gets invited and there’s a lot more guys here,” said Warsofsky, who attended his first NHL training camp in September, 2011. “I think when you get invited to this one ... they think highly of you.”

Bruins must get up to speed by Saturday night’s NHL opener
“We’ve tried to work our practice around keeping it short for the core group that’s been playing,” coach Claude Julien said after keeping the formal portion of Sunday’s first training camp workout to a tidy 75 minutes, “and then do the little extra – battles, stuff that will help you get back into game shape – with guys who haven’t played. We hope to give them an opportunity to catch up this week.”

I am excited that McQuaid will be cleared to play. I was kind of sad that he was going to miss a few games, and that means there is only one starting defense position to fill (an my guess is Hamilton will get the first of his 5 games-although a part of me figures with the short season unless Hamilton really stinks, he is sticking around even if he spends some time in the pressbox).

I am not sure exactly how this team will play out in the sprint season, but I do think the Bruins have an advantage in that the majority of the team has played together for two seasons and won't have to work out a lot of chemistry issues.

Young legs will help as well, especially on the Top 2 lines.
